Nurofen Plus - Is this dangerous ?

Hi there. I'm 24, and have been taking about 4-6 Nurofen Plus tablets everyday almost
for the past 3 or maybe 4 years. I honestly can't remember when I first started.
Is this an addiction ? I never take more than 6 per day (honestly) because I'm scared of liver/kidney damage.

Any advice is helpful to me.

Hello. I've been addicted to Nurofen Plus for 13 months now. 500mg/12.8 Codeine.  I started taking them for headaches and loved the warm relaxed feeling of them. I am from the UK and my nurofen plus would cost £7 every 2 days or so. It started small like 4 a day then just recently been doing 20-24 a day for 5 months. I've had no liver ache or any problems. Apart from a few funny stomachs here and there. I've been wanting to stop for ages. But I've plucked up the courage and gone cold turkey. My last Codeine hit was 20 hours ago and I'm feeling fine. I know withdrawal symptoms will kick in soon so I've substituted nurofen plus with just normal paracetamol I haven't yet taken any form on painkiller in 20 hours I'm going to see how I feel. I suggest taking vitamins and liver milk thistle after you give up as this will fight illness and withdrawal symptoms and milk thistle will repair your liver back up in no time. I used to take Nurofen plus to feel happy and confident. I would take 4 before a job interview and it would work! But humans can't live like that. I know how it feels. If anyone reads this I hope you find my post helpful and good luck to anyone out there quitting or taking. Peace and love.

Hey Logan24,

Im 21yr female and have had a silent addiction to these pills for the last 2 years. I used to have really bad peroid pain so l started taking Nurofen Plus... it was the only pain relief that would work! Once my periods stopped l would still continue taking them as l liked the feeling they gave me. Im a full time actor/model so before a casting or audition l would take 2 tablets and it would calm me down but then after a while l started taking them just because they gave me a relaxed feeling. I stuck to the safe limit for about 1.5 yrs (6 tablets) but then after a while it started to creep over to 6 - 10 a day. I started to really worry about my health and how my kidneys/liver were coping with all the abuse. I feel 100% fine but things can go down hill very quikly! Im getting my breasts done in 2 weeks and the doctor said l CANNOT have any painkillers that will thin my blood eg - Nurofen/Asprin 2 weeks prior to the surgery so l have to give up cold turkey! Its been 4 days now... The first day was fine... l had a slight headache but nothing too extreme. Day 2 & 3 got worse and last night l started getting really bad aches and pains all through my body and my head ache got worse! I hardly slept all night because l was extemely restless. Today l feel pretty much the same... I've pretty much had a 4 day migrane but not being able to take anything for it really *****...  All l want is some strong painkillers! Its soooo hard to resist! I gave up smoking 2 months ago and quit cold turkey and didn't find it this hard. I guess what im trying to say is try and give the painkillers the flick asap! I was only on max 10 per/day and am finding it hard to give up... I've read stories about some people's addictions getting way out of hand and exceeding 24-72 tablets per/day. I don't even want to wait and find out how hard that would be to kick! It would be so painful! You do have an addiction and it may get worse if you don't act fast! You should be able to kick the habit fine because you don't take all that many but still it will get harder if you leave the problem. I would say cut down first to 4 then 2/day then quit. My problem is having to quit straight away and not being able to cut down gradually. Im not so much worried about my liver, im worried about my kidneys. You really are doing the most damage to your Kidneys. Liver can heal itself under great pressure but Kidneys can only take so much abuse before they pack it in! Unfortunatly Kidneys don't heal like the Liver does...

I really hope this advice has helped you and goodluck with kicking those little white pills faraway!!

For people in the states  Nurofen is Advil and codeine.

Yes it is addicting .I would try taping off of it if you feel like you are starting to have a problem with it ... good luck ..let us know how you are doing.

I just looked up this medication and yes it can be dangerous and addicting due to the codeine it contains. i would be careful ad re-evaluate why you are using it. Would you like to stop using it? There are alternatives for pain management and if you read up on medications, you will actually find that narcotics can make pain worse after taking it for any length of time. If you stop cold turkey, the pain worsens before getting better, also true with tapering, but after about 2 weeks, you will notice the pain is getting better and even notice that it is less than while on meds. Please read some posts  and let us know what you decide. Like I said, we are here for you. Have a good day.

There is probably an addiction there. We  become physically and mentally dependant on our meds. I never "abused" mine either. I did have an addiction and I did go through withdrawals when stopping them. If you want to get off them, you have a few options. You can taper, gradually decrease the amount, or you can stop all at once and do cold turkey. Let us know what your plan is. We are here to help!! Best of luck to you!!
