When a Dr. gets you hooked on drugs

Has anyone ever experienced a dr./surgeon who prescribes you so much pain medicine for a very long period of time? If so its happened to  me by a pretty famous Doc. He was the guy who fixed Curt Schillings ankle in 2004.  Now he is treating me like **** and trying to make me agree that this is my own fault.
zAny comments would be greatly appreciated. I am still taking percocets daily, just had surgery and he cut my meds in half. I am suffering in pain because I had such a high tolerance to begin withbecause I had been taking it for so long.
Help??

I'm sorry you are suffering in pain. How long ago was your surgery?  Was it this same Dr. that has been perscribing the long term medication?

Are you here because you want to stop taking pain meds?

I think you can beat this without anything to replace it ONCE you get all your surgeries over with.
I used to be on a ton of Percs and other things that made percs seem like water.  I also did cold turkey on that and it can be done without any rehab or any replacement med.  It won't be fun.  You need at least a week to be home dealing with the problem.  Meaning don't do it and try to work.
Do not let this be the defining thing for your life.  Take control of this and don't let this be your event that consumes you.    As someone else said yes there are drugs that aren't wise to cold turkey from.  I think The Valium family is one and the antidepressants are another for sure.  But opiates can be withdrawn from cold.

If you can let go of your anger for this doctor your pain could get a bit better.  Anger and stress always make pain much much worse.     I hope the best for you.

Yes, some docs are conservative while others will push and continue prescribing for years, increase dosage and change meds because of tolerance.  There are many doctors out there that will actually sit down with you and discuss the importance of reading the instructions and fact sheets for medications and go over warning signs of addiction and how to stop taking medicines, under a doctor's supervision, tapering, etc. They are honest with you , want a sucessful recovery and want you to be honest and real in return. Many meds can't be cut off cold turkey (ex. xannax  and other benzos) and often, doctor's and pharmacists fail to let the patient aware, which could lead to serious side effects and death.

I am on percocet too and morphine. What is your strength of percs? I know what you mean...two yeaing years ago when I first started having the pain, the dr gave me tylenol w/codine and then increased to vicoden..then I had an MRI and was supposed to start PT, well then I lost my insurance. So for a year I was only taking pills and during that time I increased to percocet (I forget the first dose I was on) then I was bumped up to 7.5/500. Well finally this past June I got insurance again so I have been going to a pain specialist and began PT, which I am glad b/c I want to see if it will help. Well the PT is really hurting my shoulder and neck so I was just recently increased to 10/325 and 60mg of morphine. My hope is that if the PT doesn't work, then I may opt to have surgery, but I want to figure out what is going on so hopefully oneday I will be able to get off this meds. So to your question, I am wondering if your dr decreased your meds in hopes that since you had surgery and once you start to heal that the meds will be enough OR he could be doing that so you don't increase your tolerance so quickly. I read somewhere that dr's put people on thelowest dose possible so that they won't build up that tolerance so quickly..does that make sense? Anyway, I am sorry you are in pain, please keep posting so we know how you are doing.

Not personally.....my doctors were always conservative...but i do know some are not..often these are doctors who are not really "good " doctors who make a living off of prescribing meds/quacks/....i do understand that some people do not have addictive personalities and do not get addicted easily like i do/and doctors do not know this unless i tell them i am having addiction problems....when i did feel i was addicted i felt i should have told them..but did not for  a while...i dont know any doctors here who purposely get their patients addicted but I am in the south and they r stingy with pain meds here..in a way i am glad tho as i would have been on alot more th i was when i quit
