Treatment for a young heroin addict

by goodmom809, Aug 28, 2009 01:25AM
My almost 21 year old son came to his dad and me on Saturday and told us he is addicted to heroin and needs help.  He has been in detox for 5 days now and is doing very well - seems truly motivated to get well.  We are trying to figure out the best treatment program for him.  Right now, the place he's at has a day program with overnight stays for an additional cost.  We thought he would be a good candidate for long-term residential treatment program followed by a half-way house, but the insrance co is denying it.

What is the best treatment program for a young man?

PS - and how do I find a good place?

well..there is private counseling/or an addiction specialist..if the insurance covers it//mine does not//there r also free meetings held all day and late into the night in every crook and cranny of every town or city//NA and AA...I go to AA cos addiction is addiction,,most are cross addicted anyway..google Alcoholics anonymous and Narcotics anonymous and u will get a list..it is better to call the phone number listed on the sites cos often the organizations do not update the places and time for the meetings..when he goes he will get a pamphlet with a list of all meetings that is correct/up to date

he is lucky to have u on his side//people who have this disease need support....lots of it...and he is trying..u gotta give him credit for that....u may want to attend a meeting with him so u can listen and learn..my dad went with me to the first one i went to....he does not even drink but i think it gave him insight to my pill poblemat te time...like i said/most are cross-addicted and  he may need to hit a few meetings/groups/until he finds the one for him...where he fits in

keep us posted

worried gave you good advice.  I would recommend going with him to some meetings also and you could maybe try Alanon.  The more you are educated in this the better you can help him.  Family support is so important.  He is lucky to have you and hopefully he will continue in his recovery..........Keep us posted           sara

I have seen and right now know a young heroin addict who is down in a halfway house in southern Fl. There are many in the area of Palm Beach and Boca Raton and it's seems like young hard core addicts do better down there after detox. One of the reasons is there isn't as much street dope but there are other factors. all best
