There really is no good reason but for some its a safer alternative than getting drugs off the streets. Some peoples addictions will make them do very stupid things in order to get money which will usually involve some sort of illegal activity. Methadone does allow a person to a more "functional" addict when they are on the right dose and not abusing it or other medications like benzos. Ive gone down the methadone route many times and for awhile I thought it was something I would be on for life. It took care of the pain and allowed me to work and go through life without having to buy drugs from shady places. Inevitablly though I ended up abusing it along with other pills and it just never made me change that whole pill lifestyle that I was in. The thing is there are some people out there that could literally die any day from the drugs they are using and if methadone will keep that person alive rather than overdosing off heroin or oxy etc. then by all means I believe in replacement therapy. On the other hand I see too many people turn to methadone not really realizing what there getting themselves into because it is a different sort of opiate. This last time I used suboxone after I got my meth dose up over 140mgs/daily and didnt want to go through methadone w/d's again because they are a complete nightmare. Basicly suboxone worked as advertised for me, but in some way I think its just a newer form of replacement therapy just like methadone was many years ago. Dont get me wrong I think suboxone is a much better option in most cases if replacement therapy is needed in order to get off pills. For some people I know personally who have very serious neck/back problems, I saw them almost die from oxycontin, dialudid, fentanyl etc. from almost overdosing and methadone has literally saved their lives, so it does have its place. In most instances I think methadone should be last resort option when it comes to getting off opiates, the w/d's from methadone for me are the worst and longest Ive ever experienced. These days if an addict has tried and failed numerous times at quitting, tried rehabs and other methods, suboxone is a much better choice than methadone. Again though it can not be taken lightly, I ended up just as addicted to sub as I ever was to all the other opiates. Again Im rambling on and on, this is just my opinion from my experiences, were all different but you really have to do your research before starting any sort of replacement drugs to figure out if its a good choice for the individual. Take Care.

What drug are they using?? Methadone helps people who exhibit dangerous behavior in order to get their drug of choice because they have to feed their addiction.  I felt normal after I was on it I could function not obsessing over getting my drug of choice.  You have to be specific how long have they been using?  What are they using?  Methadone is hell to get off of.
