pain med detox

I have been using fentanyl patch for 8 years and now on 100mgh along with 10 mg percocet 4 times a day.
I was refered to a pain management dr and he wants me to enter detox immediately. I am afraid. This Dr believes pain should be controled without opiate drugs and I am afraid I will end up turning to illegal drugs after detox if the pain persists. i understand I am dependant but i am in pain from a 1984 back surgery and a 2003 cervical fusion.
My concern is that if I am still in pain after the detox process and this doctor refuses to prescribe any kind of pain releiving rx I will end up in more pain than now and will end up turning to illegal drugs. i do not abuse my prescribed meds and they give me some relief but I am terrified of what could happen if the treatment does not work. Please advise whether you are a proffessional or someone with the same symptoms as me. Thanks

Hi & Welcome,

You may get better, or more, responses if you post in the pain management community here at MH. those members are more familiar with the process. I hope it all works out for you. I have provided the link below to that community:

Hello, Thanks for writing. I wrote you back but haven't heard back. I don't know if I am doing it right. If you can give me any input I would appreciate it. I think I answered your questions with other posts.

Thanks alot for responding.
On my visit he did a neurological test, squeezing fingers, reflexes, push against his hand with my feet etc.
He advised me he didn't see any neurological damage ordered an MRI of my cervical and lumbar region and an xray of my neck. He stated I was on too much pain meds and wants me to enter a 3 day detox program at a nearby hospital. He stated i need to get off the meds to a point where otc drugs or low dose narcotics will handle the pain. I agreed with him that I am dependent and go through some withdrawal symptoms when the patch runs out and needs to be changed and he said detox will want me to come in when I am having those wd symptoms not after I change a patch. He stated it would likely be a 3 day detox and wants to see me in 2 weeks.
hell I don't want to have to use these meds but finally I am feeling pretty good being off work and using the percosets for btp.
I also was diagnosed with rhumatoid arthritis about 2 years ago. I tried the humera and methotrexate to no avail and my rhumatologist wants me to try an infusion treatment that was originaly used for non hodgkins lukemia at a lower dose which is $20000 a year but my insurance won't give a predetermination letter and he won't do it without one. This treatment has its own list of possible side effects including cancer and more. I feel like I am going out of my mind as it is and now this dr wants me to go through detox right away? What do you think? I am 58 and worked 33 years as a auto worker before retiring and 20 of them was hard heavy work in a foundry. The last 13 were in assembly of trucks and cars. I've had a cervical fusion, lower back disectomy and ulnar nerve transposition since 1984. The fusion was in 2003 and the back surgery was 1984 approximately. I also have copd from the foundry and smoking.
Sorry to sound like a whiner but I am scared to death of what this dr wants me to do. All I want is a comfortable life to enjoy my 2 year old grand daughter and enjoy some travel with my wife.

I have been having increased pain and my gp refered me to him after puting me on disability. I have been with my gp for over 15 years and he knows I don't abuse the meds but use them as prescribed. The new doc wants me to be clean saying that afterwards he thinks this pain can be controled by otc or low dose pain meds. I have read through some detox info and I am scarred to death. I am afraid that after detox i wonm't be able to get meds to releive my pain and will end up looking for something illegal or end up doing something drastic. I am at wits end as this new doc has info in his office stating he believes in non narcotic answers for pain relief.

I can completely understand your fears. Pain will make me do anything to stop it. So I can realate
