If you dont get some help for your problem you wont have to worry about any of this.....alcoholism is deadly.  The things you listed are the last things i would worry about.

I saw in your profile that you live in New Jersey, so I did some googling for you.

New Jersey has a pretty broad based definition of pre exisitng conditions for medical coverage (source Health Insurance Online):

Pre-existing Conditions and Portability Regarding New Jersey Health Insurance Coverage
Pre-existing Conditions and Portability
Except as stated below for federally defined eligible individuals, if you have been uninsured for more than 31 days prior to the enrollment date (which means the effective date of coverage under the individual plan), you are subject to a 12-month waiting period for coverage of "pre-existing conditions."

A "pre-existing condition" is an illness or injury which manifests itself in the six months before the enrollment date and for which:

1.a person sees a doctor, takes prescribed drugs, receives other medical care or treatment or had medical treatment recommended by a doctor, or
2.an ordinarily prudent, or careful, person would have sought medical advice, care or treatment.

So under this defintion, your dirnking would be considered a pre existing condition.

As for life insurance, according to Advantage One Life Insurance:

If you are a recovering alcoholic then you will have a big problem when applying for life insurance as you will immediately face much higher premiums. Some companies may offer a reduction in your premium for each successful year you complete without a relapse. You will also face a higher premium if you have a drink driving conviction in the past five years. Insurance companies believe that this can be an indication of a more serious underlying alcohol problem.

It is possible to take steps to reduce your insurance premiums if they are high because of excessive alcohol consumption. If you give up drinking alcohol, you could reduce your premium if you can provide evidence of the benefit this has had to your health. This is something that you could document with your doctor to highlight the improvement in your health. In most cases the insurance company will request your health records from your doctor anyway before making a judgment on your application.

To the best of my knowledge, alcoholism should not impact your ability to get a loan. This decision is based on your credit history, income and employment history and any finacial claims made against you. Your medical information should be protected under privacy laws and it appears that any criminal history may only be requested in the case of business loans.

Glad to see that you are looking forward and coming to terms with the potential impact of your drinking.

One day at a time...

I am not an expert and I am sure every state/country is different.  I grew up in NJ and these were my experiences.  When I went to the ER for detox w/ ins. it really helped to have ins. b/c I got placed into a detox hosp.  When I went w/o ins. I had to get funding from the state/county (Camden, NJ).  I ended up at Cherry Hill Hospital and they have a detox unit, they will keep you for 3-5 days which gets you through the worst of it (sometimes longer).  They will then try to get you additional funding to place you in a rehab.

Now, as far as it affecting your future insurance policies.  It should be confidential to any place of employment, so getting insurance through your job should be no prob.  They usually only discount people for existing conditions if you are trying to obtain ins. on your own.  As for Life Insurance, I really have no idea.  I imagine it being similar.  On your own, could pose a prob, through a job shouldn't pose a prob.  However, I am really not sure is a drug/alcohol addiction even qualifies as an existing condition.  But, it could pose a few problems w/ obtaining life ins.  I do not have life ins so I really wouldn't know.  But, I am not sure what kind of policy you are referring to.  I hope this helps at least a little.  Good luck, and don't let these kinds of questions interfere with getting help.  Because when it comes down to it, I would rather life sober than die young w/ins.
