Anxiety/weak heart

by smjmekg, Apr 27, 2009 10:40PM
Ok so when I was in 9th grade, about 9 years ago, I would keep getting a tightening in my chest and feel like I needed to just scream, I continued having this issue, and about 5 years ago went to the dr and to a heart dr, the heart dr (forgot what they are called)  said I had a "weak heart" and I had a sinus arrhythmia, which is normal in teens.  I've had two heart monitors, and he said the "weak" heart was caused by stress. He also said to stay away from medication like pseudophedrine and sudafed, also energy drinks make me more than extremely hyper and I don't drink them anymore because they make me feel like my heart will fly out of my chest. SO to my question...has anyone on here had a similar experience, or anxiety issues, and what do you recommend? My aunt said potassium helps, and I don't want to be put on a drug that will make me like a zombie...but it does still happen every once in a while...I know you guys aren't drs, but I wanted to know what vitamins or herbal supplements could help.

The doctor you saw is a cardiologist and I would recommend that you see another one since it has been five years. I personally would be terribly unsatisfied with a diagnosis of "weak heart!" What, exactly does that mean? He told you you had a sinus arrhythmia, which may or may not be normal in teenagers, but you aren't a teenager anymore. He told you to stay away from any medications and drinks which will over stimulate your heart, which was good advice, but what does he plan on doing about the arrhythmia? There ARE meds which will control that and will not make you feel like a zombie.
Potassium IS good for the heart, but I would not take anything until it's been cleared by a cardiologist. As for other vitamins and herbal supplements, the same advice applies. I urge you to see a cardiologist and discuss any meds, vitamins or supplements with them.
I would also recommend you visit our Heart Rhythm Forum where you will get some excellent advice about your condition.
Peace

Thank you, and I did post the same question in that forum. I plan on seeing a dr about it, but right now I'm out of the states (DH in military).
