Xanax vs. Xanax XR

by Tom3242, Dec 05, 2007 12:52PM
I have been recently  prescribed xanax xr 1mg take 1-2 twice daily.  it didn't work so i uped the dose.  i felt it a little.  i had never taken xanax xr before.  so i took 4 in the early am. before work once and they wore off by noon. they lasted like 4.5 hours.

now i have taken regular xanax.  and i know i react to that but one of my fears is that my doctor will think i abuse it.  when i have an episode or panic attack i usually would take 2 mg. to get myself to calm down.  i feel lower dosages, like 1 mg. will make me a little better but i still get that heart attack feeling. does me being 6' 3" 255lbs have anything to do with my tolerance because this apparently is considered a large dose of medication.   i get anxiety for xanax xr because i dont feel it   HELP

Xanax is a drug you are able to be addicted to, and very easy! I have taken it for about 5 years. Strated .25 1 time per day. Now I take 1 XR in the AM & 1 in the PM. I also when things are bad (more often than not) I still add .25 2 -3 times per day. My Doc says don't worry it is the ONLY thing you can tolerate. I have a TERRIBLE sensitivity to all drugs. It works, but I am going to have to up it again. I have MS and the anixiety is a huge factor in dealing with the unkown. They try antidepressants - but they blow my mind out - literally. If you are lucky enough not to have that problem, I would suggest you try them, and then wean off Xanax. They are a lifesaver - I know. If you can switch - then do. If not and your Dr will let you take the Xanax - DO IT. by the way - the generic has a totally different effect. They really vary in their effectiveness.!!! Get the name brand if possible.

you said, quote'I have been recently  prescribed xanax xr 1mg take 1-2 twice daily.  it didn't work so i uped the dose.  i felt it a little"

Ideally, you shouldnt 'feel' the xanax at all,, instead it should just be taking away the symptoms of your anxiety. Anything you 'feel' is considered a side effect and not desirable. I have to echo Aspen on this one.. it is very addictive and if your looking to 'feel' the side effects of the drug,, mabey your worrying about your doctor thinking you might be abusing it for a reason? Anxiety SUCKS,, but addiction sucks way worse,, so consider your options before you make a choice.
