Be Aware

Over on Pain Management there is a discussion about carrying your meds in bottles other than the originals. I always carry a couple of xanax with me just in case but now I am scared to because if I was to get pulled over and searched I could be arrested for having them! Be careful how you carry your meds!!

All medications for identification purposes should be carried in the original bottle they were prescribed in especially if they are a controlled substance such as Xanax. I take Klonopin and I do the same thing. The law is stringent not because of people who use the medication but because of people who abuse and unfortunately sometimes it goes too far. But any medication carried in the original prescription vial is fine.

if you carry more than they think you need for your trip you can be arrested. It's a catch22 situation.

Let me be honest. I've entered the Social Security office to represent people. They always do a very serious bag check (esp. N.Y.C. after 9-11) and they never gave me a hard time. They note that the medications I take are in the original containers with the prescription labels and they don't open them or ask what they are. If they weren't in the prescription vials and they opened them up and found a vial of pills of course they'd be concerned. I only post this because this is a government office and that's the most thorough search you'll get. I've had a harder time at concerts (which unfortunately I hardly go to now because of my physical disability, but life goes on..) but with a note from my psychiatrist that worked out okay. Since when I went to the last concert the antipsychotic I take is experimental (but as noted supervised by my psychiatrist) and does not have a prescription I was in touch with the rock club owner first by email but that's a rare circumstance (but of course unlike a controlled substance it has no potential for abuse as well). The only area of concern is if someone is pulled over for driving under the influence and yes if they see pain medication or any medication that can be abused they may factor that in but a drug test would rule out that a person was taking above the proper dosage and a letter from one's psychiatrist or doctor would confirm that it was prescribed but that circumstance shouldn't come up. I've never run into any problematical situations but if anyone ever had a history of substance abuse that might complicate things. Hard to say in complex situations which require accomodations as each is different. Otherwise the basic ground rules apply.

oooppppppsssss, I always leave my original bottle @ home and only take what I will need for my time away from home.I fear leaving my meds at the place I will be visiting.
Something I need to think about I'm sure, especially if flying, I doubt If I get pulled over in a vehical that they are going to want to search my purse ? ? ?
Thanks for the heads up

I always carry mine in the original container, won't be doing otherwise especially after reading this and with the way my luck is.
