INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS

5 years ago I started suffering from psychotic depression. For 4 years I took an antipsychotic and for 5 years I´ve taken an antidepressant. I quit antipsychotic because it made me gain 50lbs in a month, and caused high sugar problems in the long run. I was doing relatively "well" until last night. I suddenly got this impulse/urge to harm a loved one. It was not a thought, it was a very strong impulse, as if I was possessed, as if I was not in control of my mind. This lasted a minute aproximately and then dissapeared. It was very scary. This morning I woke up feeling "depersonalized", like someone else was inside my body. Now I am ok. The only thing I did differently last night was drink tea, (I am not used to drink caffeine at all). Could this have triggered this? Do you have any suggestions? is there a real danger of harming someone? or is it all in my mind?

I know when I had intrusive thoughts they were because of a mixed episode...

If you're bipolar, you shouldn't just be on an antidepressant. Just an antidepressant on someone with a mood disorder will end up raising your mood too far when you start swinging up...

There are several types of antipsychotics, I would definitely talk to the doc about a different one to treat you. I had a hard time finding a mood stabilizer because the traditional ones had the same effect - horrific weight gain. Thank goodness for Lamictal :)

I'd make an appointment asap. Instrusive thoughts are terrifying, and you don't want to question whether it could possibly happen or not... I don't think there's any way that someone could say 'no' definitively. It's just a huge red flag that your mental health is not good.

Hello Run4you:
I´ve been feeling a lot better. Exercise has helped me a lot. I think these thoughts/impulses appear when I am extremely anxious.

I am not bipolar. I suffer from psychotic depression.
It is good you found and antipsychotic that doesn´t make you gain that much weight.
Yes intrusive thoughts are terrifying. I made my appointment.

It is good to know what things trigger them (example caffeine). I do not take any caffeine daily. So that might have contributed. However like you said, this kind of thoughts are of concern, because in normal people caffeine doesn´t cause this kind of thoughts

it may just be in your mind, but have the caffine may have triggered a more severe degree od depression. like most things, even depression can be influenced by different things. doctors have been saying that they think that depression is transfered genetically, and since it is in your genes, it can be affected by interactions with different things, like i know my depression gets triggered when when sitting around doing nothing as weird as that sounds but the lack of adrenaline just makes me depressed. so try staying away from cafine, and i am christian so i would say that you should pray, but deffiantly stay away from caffine.

It depends. I can't drink anything with caffeine in it or it makes me extremely manic. Also sometimes tea and some beverages in general have additives that can cause mania such as ginseng or the like. However this could have occurred for other reasons and if thoughts like this occur even in passing they are of concern. Best to explain what happened to your psychiatrist and also discuss what might have caused it and they can tell you what to do from there.
