2 weeks post chiari decompression

I had a posterior fossa decompression and C1 laminectomy, for a chiari, on Sept. 27th. My tonsils were herniated 7mm. After surgery I still have hand tremors, ringing in my ears and dizziness when bending over or standing up. How long will this last or is it permanent? Also, is forgetfulness a symptom of the chiari? I am a nurse and will forget blood pressures immediately if I do not write them down. I am new to this website but hopefully it will help to answer many of my questions.

I had surgery Jan 2009 Decompression, Dura Plasty.  Just take it easy.  Everyone is different, and it does take time.  I still have symptoms, but not as bad as before.  I was phycially exhausted after two weeks.  I couldn't eat anything and lost 10 lbs.  Forget about walking, trips out were short and I usually had my husband wheel me around.  I still get a lot of dizziness, and just sit down and relax, like mentioned.

Hi!

I am 11 days post surgery and just had my stitches removed yesterday!

My neurosurgeon said everything looked great on the outside - but there is a LOT of healing that has to be done on the inside!!  He said it will def. take some time for your body to heal and recover!!

take it slow - and listen to your body.. if you're getting dizzy - stop...  rest... and relax!!

feel better soon!!

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Lizzy is so right...no bending over for a while....I was told that was not allowed.

It is much too soon to know what u have symptoms wise that may be perm....u need to give it some time, as we do have a resurgence of symptoms as we recover.

The ringing in the ears may be from meds....take ur time, relax as much as u can...u need rest in order to heal.

Glad to have u join us, so sorry for the reasons u had to seek us out.

hi summertump!
welcome to our family!
first off, stop bending over!! you're only 2 wks post op, girl!!  lol!  you're a nurse for petes sake!  lol  you should still be laying down for 30 min to an hour every 2-4 hrs!  take it easy and take it slow!  the pain meds will make you think you feel better than you really do in the begining!!!  everyone heals differently and has different results from the surgery.  and some of us went so long after being symptomatic without a proper dx that we have permanent nerve damage.  that said, the tremors may go, or they may stay.  it's too early to tell.  mine did go away after surgery.  but the tinnitus is still with me and will always be, i am told.  you're csf has been interrupted during the surgery and is trying to reestablish itself.  it's no wonder you're getting dizzy with bending and moving around alot.  take it easy for a while longer...you should be fine.  but if it keeps up, i would call and mention it to your surgeon.
keep us posted on how you're doing!  and welcome to the family!

Hi,
I have not had decompression surgery yet, I am awaiting an appointment with a neurosurgeon come January.  From what I have gathered on this site and various other sites is that was you are experiencing is normal.  You are only 2 weeks post op and your body is still in shock.  It may take upwards of 2 years to recover fully, the surgery that you just had is very serious.  As months and months pass you should notice that your symptoms are becoming less and less.  Yes, I have horrible forgetfulness, I look to my friends and family to remind me of the past, and things often leave my head as soon as they enter it.
Again, I haven't had the surgery yet, but from what I have gathered your headed down the right track.
Take care of yourself and all the best to you,
