Liquid Sound in Neck, Post Decompression.

Hello, im rather new to the forum =P Anyway, onto the point. It's been about 4 or 5 years since my decompression surgery. Before then i suffered from extreme pain in my arm and back, normally after a sneeze or cough. However, after the decompression my symptoms have all but gone away. However, for the past year, normally several times a day, i feel and hear a 'liquid' type sound in my neck. It sounds as if water is running through a hose that has been bent, like it's forced and highly pressurized. It doesnt hurt, but is rather annoying and for some odd reason has the ability to proc anxiety attacks (which i have alot of for random reasons). Is it a late symptom of the surgery?

I have that rushing, fizzing sound in my left ear, and a fullness there, left over from before the surgery.  I'll mention it to my neurosurgeon next week when I see him and see what he has to say.  It's kind of like white noise and I just mostly forget about it.

you must be one of us who also hear the fizzing sound at the back of our neck just below our skull... there's the thread that you might be interested to read through, although most of their doctors really didn't say anything:

I have heard that shunts can need adjustments and or be replaced. I will pray u do not have to go thru that.
When I was in for my PFD I met a woman that was in for a shunt adjustment and they could not get the right setting, so she is going to get tethered cord surgery.

I will pray things go well on ur next visit.

I get the same sound. Double check with your neuro, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You might consider doing some neck exercize (after approving it through your Neuro) or take a phys therapy class for your neck.

If u use the search MedHelp..and put fizzing sound in neck u will see all the posts on this topic....most were in the neuro forum.

I would mention it to the dr, but if the MRI shows all is well then congrats.....and I am sure u will either get used to the sound or it will just not be as noticable...( we hope) that it will be a distraction.  : )

Yeah, it sounds just like that. To Selma; Yeah, had another MRI a few months ago and everything was good, only had one 5cm Syrinx left and it too was shrinking still. Never thought to mention the liquid sound to my doctor, as i think i remember reading somewhere that it sometimes happens after the surgery. Idk, but it's a really confusing whether or not it's common or harmless.

I didn't know it was possible to hear your CSF. That's interesting & something I'll look into. I haven't had the surgery, but I often hear a noise similar to your desription in my neck/base of my head. Mine alost sounds like when you twist a cap off of a Coke bottle--that hissing noise of the carbonation being released. Is that similar to yours? I'm sorry to hear it causes anxiety attacks. Have you seen a psychiatrist post-op? Maybe that would help? I'm just assuming...Keep us posted on any news you hear regarding the noise, as to what exactly the docs say it could be. Good luck & congrats on the success of your decompression surgery!

HI and welcome to the Chiari forum.

From things I have read it is possible to hear the CSF in ur neck....it could be that. Have u been to ur dr since ur PFD? Ne MRI's since to check on things?

I just had my PFD on May 28th and am still sore from the surgery itself, so it is too soon to know just what all my benefits r....but my numbness in my left hand and leg are gone : )

Some of the other members will pop on and comment also, I am sure.....

I hope u stay a part of our support community....the people here r great friends!!
