listen up kiddos i have whopper of a story for you

I have been on one hell of a ride the last 2 days. I had my appointment with the new NS ( Dr. Michael Mervert) and he told he would not do the surgery because the herniation was not greater than 5 mm him and i argue back and forth for about 20 min or so and finally he said "I will bet you a dollar that you do not have CSF flow problems or blockage" I said ok let's bet he said he would send for another MRI that check for the blockage I asked if we could do the MRI right away since I was at the hospital (his office is in the hosptial) already he said he would set it up so I went for my new MRI it took about a 1/2 hour by the time it was done the MRI had caused me to have a violent migraine it hit me so fast that I was in the bathroom sick to my stomach. The MRI Tech told me she wouls prefer to take me to the fast track emergency room since she could not get a hold of the NS by the 10:30 pm I was admited into the hospital to try and bring the pain under control from the migraine. So today the NS came in my room with a dollar in his hand I was confused at first because i had forgot about the bet, so basically he was telling me I won the bet and schedule for surgery Oct 1st, This surgery will not be the endoscopic surgery that was origally scheduled with Dr. Di. DR Mervert will doing the normal chiari surgery and putting a temporary drain in from my head to my back and he will taking a dermis graft from my thigh for the patch covering the brain.

Now I have a question for anyone here how serious is it when you have a blockages of fuild from the brain?

I hate to bother you with this question because your surgery is less than a week away and I'm sure you have plenty to do before hand, but now that you have had the experience with Dr. Mervert, would you recommend him? I live on the eastside of Cleveland and his name came up in a search for drs I recently did. Unfortunately I don't remember what the search was for...possibly when I was searching my medical insurance company's listing of neurologists/NS's. I am really in the dark here as to know who to go to. Also you mentioned Dr. Di and if I may ask, what happened there? I have seen his name come up a number of times and since he is with the Cleveland Clinic and uses a less invasive surgical technique, he is on my list of possible NS's.

I wish you the best of luck with your surgery.

HI Marla,

Well I also had a blockage and part of the reason I had my surgery.....the blockage usually is not a total blockage....if it continued for a long time it would make ur herniation bigger....cause more symptoms and possibly create a syrinx.( if u don't have one already)

The symptoms u r having can be attributed to the blockage......the longer it is left alone is where u can run into the possibility of nerve damage.

I am so very proud of u for standing up for what u knew to be true....BRAVO!!!!!

Doctors are men who prescribe medicines of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, in human beings of whom they know nothing. lol!!!

Thanks for the support I REALLY NEEDED IT!!!!! So any others chiari suffers please do what you have to, to get your point across and if something does not fell right to you or you do not have the confidence in your NL or NS then look for another. they are not GOD but some of them do have that I know more than you do attitude dont be affraid to speak your mind, you know your body and what your body tells you so if you have to have tissy fit then do it and make yourself heard. Good luck to everyone.

SO proud of you for standing up for yourself!!!

I hate you had such a violent attack like that! As for the fluid .... its pretty serious. I haven't gotten this far either but from what I have researched the reason we have these "attacks" is because our brain is basically Screaming for Help! It's trying to tell us something is wrong! I'm sure selmaS can explain this a WHOLE LOT better than me!

Good luck with the surgery and keep us posted!

I have no idea, but mine came back with abnormal csf flow as well and that was with my nl and I do not see surgeon until November.
So as far as my doctor's go, they do not consider that urgent.  My first thoughts were, shouldn't that be looked at sooner?  Guessing not!  LOL

So awesome you stood up for yourself and didn't take no for answer and got some answers and hopefully will be feeling better soon!  That is awesome!

Hi
To put this into a medical context you would need to talk to your NS
But as a fellow patent I would say
using commonsense as a guide you must think it cant be good, CSF fluid brings nutrients to the spine and brain and remove waste so if it is obstructed and all that this entails then this is one issue you need to conceder . The other striking thing that comes to mind is what is causing the obstruction, is it a syrinx if so then this needs to be resolved.
These are just some things that come to mind.
