After years of  counseling and working with a family physician I am frustrated wondering if I have the right diagnosis.  My son has tried Ritalin, Dexedrine, Concerta, and soon Adderoll.  I feel he has anxiety and it triggers hyperactivity.  The doctors feel it is the opposite.  I am know professional and don't claim to be but am so confused and feel terrible about using my son as a guinea pig on these medications.  Is this normal for this diagnosis.  Or is it really just process of elimination.  My son is such as smart, caring, sensitive child that struggles for exceptance.  Please help.

Seek a second opinion re: the diagnosis, and do so with a mental health professional. If, indeed, the diagnosis is primary ADHD, and there is no other emotional or mental health condition, treatment by the pediatrician or family physician can be fine. But, the diagnosis may be incorrect, or there may be ADHD alongside some additional condition. Now, having said that, there are many children who are tried on the various stimulant medications. Some children receive benefit from one or another of the medicines, and some children do not benefit at all.
