Head banging?

I have a 16 month old son who recently started banging his head on things the floor wall anything that is around him when he has his little temper tantrums. I was wondering if this was normal and if there was any way to stop it or is it just a stage? My niece started doing the same thing at his age and it left bruises all over her head but her parents couldn't make her stop. She doesn't do it anymore she's four but I need to know if there is anything I can do before it gets worse.

This is not at all uncommon and you cannot prevent the head banging per se. you can try to see that he on a protected (e.g., carpeted) area, but Mother Nature takes care of this.
