Hypothyroidism

by Jenny Salter, Sep 06, 1999 12:00AM
To whom it may concern:

I am 20 yrs. old and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism approximately 2 1/2 yrs. ago.  I gained about 20 pounds.  I now weigh 130 pounds, and I am only 5'3".  I think that is probably a little overweight.  I know that this is a symptom of hypothyroidism, but I was told at one time that after taking medication I should begin to lose some of the weight.  If so, why haven't I, and what can I do about this?

Thanks for your help,

Jenny Salter

Dear Jenny-
You are correct. Overweight is often a sign of hypothyroidism, but not always.  With regard to your weight - I would suggest discussing your concerns with your doctor.  Perhaps your weight is related to your thyroid condition - but maybe not.  I trust  that your doctor has been seeing you on a regular basis, checking your blood for thyroid function activity - monitoring your overall health - even assessing your diet and exercise regimen.  If you have not been seen recently - like in the last 2-3 months - I would recommend making an appointment. Perhaps your medication needs to be readjusted - but not necessariy. If your thyroid functions are normal on your present medications - then most probably, an adjustment does NOT need to be made. But if your thyroid functions are abnormal - then your doctor is there for you.  Good luck.... Dr. EV.
