Methylphenidate (Ritalin)

Methylphenidate (Ritalin)

My 6 year old son takes 7 mg of Methylphenidate (Ritalin) 2 times per day. He has a just developed a cold and cough so I purchased Tylenol Cold Medicine. The box says not to use it if you are taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Tylenol Cold medicine contains Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine maleate, Dextromethorphan & Pseudophedrine. I'm not sure if Ritalin is a MAOI. Do you have any insight?

Dear Lisa,

No, Ritalin is not an MAOI (mono-amine oxidase inhibitor). These represent a class of antidepressant medications. Be watchful, though, of the cold preparations, because the ephedrine can have an activating influence with children.
