Dear Jen,

Pneumonia is an infection that affects the lungs. It is caused by bacteria or viruses and, in some rarer cases, by parasites or other organisms.

The trachea is a tube that carries air to the lungs. It has two branches, called the bronchi. Bronchial pneumonia refers to an infection in this part of the respiratory system.

Symptoms of pneumonia often include fever, shaking chills, cough, rapid and shallow breathing, pain in the wall of the chest and fatigue.

If pneumonia is caused by bacteria, treatment will include an antibiotic. Drinking sufficient fluid and having bed rest are also important. Sometimes hospitalization is required.
