COPD

Was diagnosed approx. 7 months ago with moderate COPD. I did know for several yrs. before diagnosis that something was wrong with my breathing. I had all the classic symptoms such as the coughing, mucus, sob, etc. But, lately I am noticing new symptoms. My fingernails are turning blue,  swelling of the ankles and memory problems. The memory problems are of great concern to me. I am forgetting things that usually come easy for me. Also, hard to explain but my speech is being effected as well. Words just are not coming out right at times. My question is does these new symptoms mean that my COPD is progressing? My doctors never give me straight answers. I just want someone to be straight forward with me. I do believe the COPD is progressing from moderate stage to severe stage. Just want confirmation that I am possibly correct. Thank you.

Your description of recent symptoms and "blue fingernails" suggests the likely possibility of oxygen deprivation.  This could be occurring both day and night and could result in dysfunctional sleep, which in turn could account for your memory problems.  This could then be compounded by a sleep disorder called, sleep apnea.

The oxygen deprivation could then result in heart failure, evident in your ankle swelling.

Your chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) could be progressing but it seldom progresses fast enough to account for your rapid decline.

Your inability to "get straight answers" from your doctors must be very frustrating.  You should seek care from a doctor who is familiar with the treatment of COPD and the common complications of COPD, most likely a lung specialist.

Most of what you describe is treatable and, at least some of it, reversible.
