CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) EXPERT FORUM
Chronic Phlem every morning

Chronic Phlem every morning

Every morning I cough up phlem-sticky and yellow or clear.  Usually atleast 2-3 times and a few time throughout the day.  I used to smoke cigarettes and marijuana til about 10 years ago when I quit.  Can this be a sign of copd?  My mother was recently diagnosed with it.  Can it be hereditary?
Thanks

It could be 1 of the 2 diseases that comprise chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, the other being emphysema.  It could be hereditary to the extent that some families are genetically predisposed to have bronchi that are more sensitive to the corrosive effects of cigarette and marijuana smoke.  But, you should not assume your productive cough is due to your past smoking and should at least get a chest x-ray, especially if the cough is of recent onset, following a hiatus of no cough, of some years following smoking cessation.

Your productive cough may yet subside, provided that you never smoke again and do not engage in occupations with reported exposure to smoke, fumes, dust or other toxins.

As for COPD, the best measure of that is pulmonary function tests (PFTs).

Good luck.  You made a very wise choice to quit smoking.
