Ankle swelling

Ankle swelling

Help! I just started to go back to gym and all of sudden got a terrible and painful shin splint.  After two weeks of icing and advil,  the shin feels better but now my ankle has been swollen and is very painful at night when sleeping due to any movement.  I never twisted it or felt anything at gym to think I injured it.  I just walk on the treadmill for 35 mins.
And originally there was no swelling, just pain.
The strange thing is that the exact thing happened to my other leg about a month ago after a walk.  It eventually got better. I made an appt for an orthopedic but not sure if I should be consulting my md? Any suggestions or input greatly appreciated!

It could be gout, and if so, you need to have a simple blood test at your Primary's office to confirm it.

Gout is caused by high uric acid levels, which show up readily in the blood.  There is medication to rid your body of the uric acid, and another medication to keep it at a lower level, thus keeping the attacks at bay.  The medications used are colchicine, and allupurinol, respectively.

Colchicine is only used for ridding the body of uric acid build up, then it is discontinued when the attack goes away.

I hope this helps.......but you need to know that this is a heart disease bulletin board, exclusively.  I just happen to suffer from gout, so I answered your post.

You may not have gout, but it wouldn't take much to have it checked, so it's worth checking out.
