GOP offers own proposal to avert 'fiscal cliff'

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/03/15649000-gop-offers-own-proposal-to-avert-fiscal-cliff?lite

A snippet from the article:

"As Republicans put it, they would raise $800 billion in new revenue through tax reform, $600 billion in health savings, $200 billion from changes to the Consumer Price Index, $300 billion in discretionary spending cuts, and another $300 billion in savings in mandatory spending. Many of the health savings track closely with the changes to Medicare first proposed in Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan’s budgets.

Republicans say the plan, using the Obama administration’s math, would achieve $4.6 trillion in savings.

It’s unclear, though, whether the Republican plan would move toward ending the stalemate around the fiscal cliff negotiations, with less than a month remaining until the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts are scheduled to snap into place on Jan. 1."

Thanks. Doesnt sound easy.

(NEWSER) – Nancy Pelosi will file a motion today to force a vote on Bush-era tax cuts, her office says. The House minority leader's "discharge petition" would aim for a vote this month on extending the cuts for those earning less than $250,000, while ending them for those earning more, the Washington Post reports. The measure passed the Senate this summer. Such petitions, which rarely work, are a minority party attempt to get a vote on a bill the House Speaker won't bring up. To prompt a vote, Pelosi would need 218 signatures.

I heard the dems are trying to discharge a vote? Force a vote on the tax cuts for those making 250.000 and less. Anyone know how that happens?

The biggest problem I have with going over the cliff, other than it's not necessary, is the sequestration.  That could have HUGE impacts.

Mike, I sure hope you're right...I honestly don't think it's going to happen.  I think this is more strategic in nature than any of us could imagine.

We are going off the cliff. PERIOD. I'm fine with that! It's an unfortunate reality that BOTH parties can't be BIG about the situation. ..Neither side is going to budge. Once we've "gone over" then the REAL negotiating will begin because the longer we stay "off the cliff", the more it WILL hurt both parties IF they don't get a BIG DEAL done...

They'll reach an agreement. Of that I have no doubt whatsoever.
