Luvox and sleeping problems

I've been taking Luvox for about 6 weeks now and I'm still having sleeping problems. My doctor did prescribe me Ambien to help me but now I take it every night.  I try to fall asleep without it but I just can't.  Is this a problem?

Dear Tracy

Some people can have insomnia as a side effect from Luvox. Ambien (Zolpiden) is a non benzodiazepine (benzodiazepines are habit forming) medication that is used in the treatment of insomnia. Sleeping pills have the potential to be abused and people can become dependent on them and hence they are recommended to be used only for shorter periods of time. I am not clear on the total duration of time that you have been  taking. I would recommend that you talk to your doctor about your concerns and slowly taper off the drug before discontinuing to prevent any withdrawal symptoms.

Sincerely
HFHS-M.D.
