Narcissism: What is it?

My adult son is a substance abuser.   He has been diagnosed as narcissistic.  What is it?  What help is available?  How can we, his parents help him?   Is there a connection between it and alcoholism?  Please help, we are at a loss as to what to do.

     Your adult son may have been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder(vs traits) which can and often does co-exist with alcohol and
substance abuse.  Narcissistic personality disorder is one of ten different
personality disorders described by the DSM IV;  it is characterized by a
pervasive pattern of grandiosity, a need for admiration and a lack of empathy
in a variety of contexts.  People with this disorder may have a sense of entitlement, show haughty or arrogant behavior or attitude and exploit others to achieve his or her own needs.
      Psychotherapy may be helpful for people who have narcissistic personality disorder if motivated for treatment.  Its also important to address other issues
that go along with this disorder such as alcohol and substance abuse as well as
mood disorders.
      How can you help your son?  The challenge is to engage them in treatment
while preserving their self esteem.  You can encourage him to enter into treatment and discourage behavior such as his sense of entitlement, substance
