Hi - I was hoping someone might have an idea on any relationship between sleep deprivation/anxiety and the symptoms of bipolar disorder.  Basically my question is that if someone has exhibited the symptoms of bipolar disorder as well as paranoia(but the occurrence is the first of its kind, and comes during a period of physical illness, sleep deprivation, and increased stress) if it is indicative of a likely bipolar condition or may be a result of the circumstances.
If anyone has any idea, please let me know.  Thank you in advance.

Dan,
Perceived decreased need for sleep is one of the classic symptoms of manic or hypomanic episodes of bipolar disorder. Stressful life events such as physical illness have a role in the onset and timing of bipolar illness. Sleep deprivation can promote the cycling (number and intensity of symptoms) in bipolar disorder. Bipolar patients are always instructed to sleep regular hours, never to work midnights, swing shifts, or for example fly a "red eye". In the same vein, the onset of insomnia in a bipolar patient often signals the beginning of a cycle. There are medical conditions and medications that may cause manic symptoms similar to those observed in bipolar disorder.
