Would someone sexually abused as a child have more probability
of suffering BPD than one who was not?  Also would a person
with BPD be more likely than another to claim false date
rape?  Could this person have a flashback to that time when
she had no control of what was happening to her?

Dear Barbara, I do not have any statistical information on the prevalence of history of sexual abuse in borderline personality disorder patients, although there is some literature to suggest that this may be the case.  I can say in regards to etiology of borderline personality disorder, that depression is common in the family backgrounds of BPD patients and BPD patients have more relatives with mood disorders than do control groups.  I can not say whether a BPD patient would be more likely to claim false date rape.
I hope that this information has been helpful for you.  It is intended for educational purposes only and should not replace consultation with a physician.  If you would like to see a mental health professional at Henry Ford Hospital, please call 248-689-7476.

What is the definition of Borderline Personality Disorder?
I have been in a relationship with someone who I have recently found out has lead a seporate life away from me.  He has lied about most things in his life, had another long term relationship, another home seporate from me, and has severe mood swings when questioned or confronted.  He functions in a business atmospher as a very well respected professional and successful sales person.
I am very confused and it has been suggested that he has borderline personality disorder.  When I confronted him about what I found out re: his other life, he continued to lie and eventually turned the whole situation around as my fault.  He is still unable to admit what happened and I will never be able to get answers from him.
Please help me understand - Thank you

Hi Karen,
There is a new book out available from amazon.com entitled "Walking on Eggshells" .It is about the very subject of which you speak. I was married to a woman for years with the disorder you speak of, and it is incredibly confusing as well as frustrating. If what you think is true, get away would be my advice.
Right, wrong, or indifferent. There are also many sites on the net that describe the characteristics of the disorder. With those you can better define the situation. The illness my ex suffers is hell for her, I know. But it destroyed a long marriage and half a life's work as well. With three confused teens involved. Sometimes one just has to cut their losses and turn and walk away. No matter how much it hurts.
