grandsons speach

my grandson is 3 plus yrs old, he understands everything you say to him and will follow directions perfectly even with my back turned.he talks all the time but you can understand very little.he had a 15 month delay at first but now seems ok in every other way but speach.it is very frustrating for him when no one knows what hes saying. could this be physical? the doc. thinks its too early to tell. he is very smart, happy and loving.

There are some children like this who just change one day. It is a developmental lag, but sounds to me to be in the normal range, but you can check that out through your pediatrician to make sure.

I have a cousin whose child had a similar problem. It was as if his aparatus to speak wasn't working but he knew perfectly well what he wanted to say although when he tried he couldn't do so in a way others could understand. It lasted some years and had an effect on him until he was about ten, however he is now in his late teens and not a single sign of there ever have been a language deficit.

Hopefully, it wont be anywhere near that long in this case, but I write this just to let you know people do develop at very different speeds so don't give up.
