foot wound

foot wound

our large dog, has had a foot injury for months. we have tried everything we can think of to protect the wound. but everytime we get it almost healed , she licks, pulls off the scab. the wound area is on her right rear foot. On the upper surface. She is a very large dog,mastiff/hound. Cone collars did not work, is there any thing else we can do, or is it just an area we need to leave alone? the vet said she would eventually quit licking the area, but it has been 6months, and we are very concerned that it will lead to her losing her foot. help?

Talk to your vet about keeping the foot covered with a bandage and a boot.  Since you can get it to the point of scabbing over well, you can also try products like veriton spray or bitter apple spray to discourage licking.  We've had to do this before, and some dogs it works like a charm, others completely ignore the bad taste and it does no good.  It just depends on the dog.  If she's leaving it alone until it scabs, that's a good thing, and it may just get really itchy by the time it scabs.  Another product that might help keep her off it is an liquid called Dermachlor Flush Plus, available from your vet.  It's supposed to help discourage biting and licking of wounds, and has the added benefit of being an antiseptic.
