Abnormal Hemoglobin

Hi, our son just turned 2 months old. At his check up the doctor explained that he had an abnomality in his hemoglobin. He sent him for more blood work but it came back as 8% "unknown" beta. We are somewhat in a panic because we have no idea what that means and our doctor is not very good at explaining himself! He has referred us to a hemotologist. We are very concerned!
What does this mean? I am concerned with my search findings online! Does that mean our baby is sick or possibly could become sick with one of these major diseases?
I am hispanic and my husband is American. We have a daughter that is perfectly healthy. Any information you could possibly share would be great!
