My biopsy report

First of all, I would like to thank this forum for helping me understand.  I have booked an appointment with the Leading Hepatologist at NY Presbyterian and feel good about it.  Prior I was just going to my local GI.I can't get into him until May but do have my biopsy report and wonder if anyone can answer the following:

I am Grade II and Stage III

1.  Trichrome Staining:  Present?
2.  Reticulum Staining:  Present?
3.  Focal minimal microvesicular fatty infiltration?
4.  No alcoholic hyaline identified but there are rare foci of acidophilic bodies?

I have gone back to (after 3 years of being bad) to a Vegan diet (with fish) and no glass of wine with my dinner.  So aside from trying to understand the above diagnostic remarks I am also wondering if any are tied to diet.

Alcohol is extremely bad for your liver. Stopping would have a greater affect on your liver's health than eating Vegan (though a healthy diet is a good idea.)

In case you haven't seen it yet check out HectorSF's post about "Metavir Grading for Liver Biopsy Results"

No particular diet is required at your level of liver disease. Your liver is functioning properly at this point. Do stay away from alcohol and other meds that could damage your liver further.

I am Grade II and Stage III
Stage III. This means you have a considerable amount of fibrosis. Fibrosis with architectural distortion but no obvious cirrhosis. You should be looking into treating the hep c virus soon as the further your liver disease progresses it will have an impact of your odds of clearing the virus.

The trichrome stain is performed on liver biopsies to determine the degree of fibrosis.

The reticulin stain provides important information about the architecture of the liver.

Microvesicular fatty infiltration is known as fatty liver. Commonly associated with alcoholism.

Alcoholic hyaline, indicated that damaged hepatic cells is due to alcoholism.
Acidophilic bodies, a granular accumulation of calcium in hepatocytes (liver cells).

"I am also wondering if any are tied to diet". You should not drink anymore. Avoid NSAIDs Ibuprofen, aspirin, etc. and you should get immunized against hep A and B and pneumonia if you haven't done so already. Your hepatologist will tell you all this and other things you need to avoid. It will cause your liver disease to progress faster and damage your liver more. Food should not have any effect on the functioning of your liver yet. If you progress to Stage IV then you should make dietary changes.

To understand more about your illness you may want to read more about the basics of hepatitis c and liver disease. Hepatitis Central is a good resource for both.

Good luck.
