Not for all, but it works great on muscle pain

"No Medical Value?" 27 Studies Show Pot Kills Pain

Cannabis and its active constituents appear to be safe and modestly effective treatments in patients suffering from a variety of chronic pain conditions, including neuropathy (pain due to nerve damage), according to a literature review to be published in The Clinical Journal of Pain.

An investigator from New York University, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, conducted a PubMed search to survey the percentage of positive and negative published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing cannabinoids as treatments for pain. Of the 56 hits generated, 38 published RCTs met inclusion criteria. Of these, “71 percent (27) concluded that cannabinoids had empirically demonstrable and statistically significant pain relieving effects, whereas 29 percent (11) did not.”

Cannabinoids appeared to be most effective in treating hard-to-treat neuropathic pain conditions. “[F]or notoriously difficult to treat conditions such as HIV neuropathy, … cannabinergic pain medicines, particularly inhaled cannabinoid botanicals, are one of the only treatments that have been shown to be safe and effective with the highest levels of evidence,” the review states.

Five to ten percent of the US population is estimated to suffer from neuropathic pain at some point during their lives.

The study concludes, “Overall, based on the existing clinical trials database, cannabinergic pain medicines have been shown to be modestly effective and safe treatments in patients with a variety of chronic pain conditions. … Incorporating cannabinergic medicine topics into pain medicine education seems warranted and continuing clinical research and empiric treatment trials are appropriate.”

A separate paper, published in January in the Harm Reduction Journal, concluded: “Prescribing cannabis in place of opioids for neuropathic pain may reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with prescription pain medications and may be an effective harm reduction strategy.”

Full text of the study, “Cannabinergic pain medicine: A concise clinical primer and survey of randomized controlled trial results,” will appear in The Clinical Journal of Pain

I had kind of figured that out by doing my own study, lol,  I also preferred a few tokes over ad's. The problem I have is since I am currently doing triple tx with incivek and my liver is stage 4 cirrhosis my transplant nurse said specifically not to smoke mj. I was told even smoking small amounts could effect my liver negatively because of the cirrhosis. I don't know what to believe but I know I want to give my liver the best chance to kill this hcv I can so for now my token days are up in smoke!

Being that i am also cirrhotic i was warned about it also because if problems would arise during treatment i would not have been able to be put on the transplant list.

Too bad the DEA thinks botanical cannabinoids are considered to be as dangerous as heroin.

I was also concerned with doing further damage to my liver and since I didn't know if the smoke or brownies would do further damage I just chose not too.
I did and do have sore muscles and joints and even just a few tokes used to relieve this pain as well, but no more for me...

I've found the brownies are better for muscle pain, at least for me.
However, there was a man who was denied a transplant based on his use of cannabis, which ironically was prescribed by his doctor.

The only study to claim it causes damage to the liver was flawed. It was conducted on alcoholics, some who smoked and others who didn't.

If I were being screened for a transplant, I would not use it nor would I admit to having used it in the recent past.

All:  So good for pain but bad  liver?  Like pain killers?  If one is not on tx is it still bad for the liver?  Darn I was hoping to substitute my social wine drinking for the good old canabis. So confusing.....:-(

Whether it is bad for the liver is not known.
( The one study that claims it is bad for the liver was severely flawed)
Doctors in California want it legalized so more research can be done.

The theory I've heard it it is less likely to cause damage if you either use a vaporizer or ingest it, the idea being that it is the smoke, that is damaging.
But there is no research to back it.
I doubt it would be as damaging as alcohol but I'm biased.

At night when my legs ache and I feel so out of sorts, I smoke a bit with a vaporizer. My Dr. is fine with it, says it is preferable to otc pain meds in terms of the liver.
I think that if you made that sort of commitment for your liver and you are managing, it is best to stay clear of it or anything you may have a doubt about. :)

Can Do is right...you will be taken off of the transplant list if cannabis is found in your blood or you start passing out joints at the Liver Transplant Center.
Seriously, anyone with cirrhosis should NOT be taking ANY drug without your hepatologist approval. Hope that is obvious and clear to the cirrhotics out there.

Since we are in fantasy land...

Pain?
Based on personal experience with excruciating pain. (Take kidney stone pain and multiply by 4. AKA Liver cancer chemo). I highly recommend IV-PCA (patient controlled analgesia) infusion pump commonly seen in post surgery recovery rooms.

Put your fav opiate (hydromorphone, fentanyl, tramadol, sufentanil, etc.) in there or stick with the "gold standard", morphine, then  and press the "Demand" button until you pass out. Wa la. Pain gone!
......Although so are you.

I don't think we can count on any real info from the established medical profession....they don't want any more cheap and easy meds with no side effects.....unless they can cash in on it big time.  It's too bad because it certainly has its value, but they will deny that to their dying days.

The privatization of prisons also fuels the propaganda to keep mj an evil and dangerous drug. Good Lord, the prisons would be empty and their profit margins dismal.

Ethics are a thing of the past and have been replaced by greed. Greed first, ethics second.

That's ok because no one is stupid enough to believe that.

Oh yeah it "those" bad evil people in pharma. Made synthetic interferon just to make people suffer. Same with Ribavirin. Don't even get me started on the antivirals. You can't fool me just because it has almost doubled the cure rates of genotype 1 patients. It is bad, bad, bad. It's a conspiratorial plan to take our money that all. If we just eat enough wheat grass, acai or whatever this months favor is we would all be cured and look 20 years younger.

"I don't think we can count on any real info from the established medical profession..."
Absolutely! What do doctors know about disease and treatment? We were better off with blood letting and drilling holes in people's skills to let those evil demons out. Forget this pill nonsense. That is for wimps. Let's go back to the dark ages that is when people had ethics and values. So we killed a 1/4 of the population who didn't believe in our "dog". Bring back the Spanish Inquisition that will give us ethics and values (kill us). But its for a good cause. A few days on the rack will make you forget all the black bile and humors (hepatitis).

"Ethics are a thing of the past"
Ah when was that? Ever study the history of the human race? It ain't pretty. People have been enslaving, raping, torturing and killing other people since the beginning of recorded history. Check out the news. Nothing new under the sun there.

When was that great past when I was right with the world and people had ethics...

* When In ancient Greece in the 6th and 5th centuries BC where their were on average three or four slaves per household.
* When 30% of the population of the Roman Empire in the 1st century was enslaved?
* When Jesus was given the death penalty?
* When Genghis Khan created one of the largest empires in history?
*In 1860 when the slave population in the United States was four million men woman and children?
* When during the 1600s over 100 alleged witches had been tried and hanged in New England.
* Or the fabulous 1950 before the polio vaccine, interferon, riba, antivirals for HIV and other viruses, liver transplants, effective chemo treatment when cancer was a death sentence.

That's what we need, more suffering, torture  and death. Great stuff. For those who believe what is my opinion is 100% nonsense feel free to suffer all you like. It is your life.

As for myself and maybe a few other "lost souls" who think we may have some experiences of living in the real world. Please try to keep your pedantic black and white understanding of reality in check and tell us how many people you have helped in your life and how with your high moral standing have made a positive difference to make this world a better place.

Okay let's say all the doctors, pharma people, nurses, social workers, etc etc, are evil.
I would love to hear you tell me/us what YOU do to make the world a better place.

"What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of.
What the world needs now is love, sweet love

Whoa, whoa, whoa, where did that come from?  I didn't interpret any of these comments as anyone wanting to go back to the dark ages, you might have slightly overreacted.

My family and I have used alternative medicine for almost everything, with great success I might add.  We don't knock western medicine, just choose to augment any necessary western medicine (hep C treatment, anyone?) with Chinese meds/acupuncture.   For example, one of our doctors is Misha Cohen in SF, who works with our hepetologist.  She never discourages western treatment, just helps to mitigate the side effects from said western treatment.  It has been very effective for us.

You can count me as suspicious at times over the intentions of Big Pharma, but I am grateful for the advances that have allowed my husband to undergo what is most likely to be a final cure for his Hep C.  As a matter of fact, I have written a 2 page love letter to the lead Vertex researcher which my doctor has hand delivered.

Nothing is black and white, all good or all bad.

Just for the record anyone who thinks MMJ is cheap, you are confused. In CO the card cost a minimum of 300$ and then the MMJ at the cheapest is 90$ for a 1/4 oz.

"Just for the record anyone who thinks MMJ is cheap, you are confused."
Actually, it depends on the state and laws governing MMJ. Here for instance, one can grow their own.

"4.9.1 Comply with possession limits and possess up to 2 ounces of useable marijuana

4.9.2 Comply with possession limits and cultivate no more than two mature marijuana plants, and seven immature marijuana plants if the registered patient elects to cultivate marijuana"

Co laws are a little dirrerent

I) No more than two ounces of a usable form of marijuana.

(II) No more than six marijuana plants, with three or fewer being mature, flowering plants that are producing a usable form of marijuana.

However Co also has a clause that states

(II) Engage in the medical use of marijuana in plain view of, or in a place open to, the general public.

Meaning that you can't grow outside in the veiw of anyone

So if  you add in the cost of a green house or the space and lighting, nutrients, electricity ect ect for an indoor grow... it doesn't become that cost effeciant for quiet awhile.

Not that I know anything about that kind of thing though.
