Eureka is correct about your diet. Ingesting anything beyond what she mentioned can further damage your liver and cause more complications. If you have cirrhosis your liver's cells have been transformed into scar tissue and nodules. How much the liver can recover from cirrhosis is something that is unknown at this time. But if you can clear the hpatitis C virus that is always a good thing.
Your doctor should tell you what you can do and what you can't as far as eating and many other things. You have a serious illness. Even though you my feel perfectly healthy in time you liver will probably fail. If you are unable to clear the hepatitis C virus it will surely fail in time. The good news is you appear to still have time to try treatment. And treatments right now are the more effective they have ever been. No over the counter medicines should be taken except Tylenol and only up to 2 gm per day. There are many thing you need to due if you have cirrhosis besides diet. You need meds, blood tests, imaging tests fir liver cancer every 6 month, possible biopsy, various inoculations (hep A, hep B, pneumonia, flu vaccine) and just too way too many to go into here. There is why you need to work with a hepatologist from now on. There are the only doctor qualified and experienced to treat you.

You need to try the treatments that are available now before your liver disease progress to the point you will be unable to treat you hepatitis C.

Good luck to you!

Eureka! You know ur stuff! Valuable advice... Almonds and oatmeal are great. Fage brand Greek yogurt is loso, hi protein, n low fat. I tried some bovine extract for a while, jus seemed too nonconventional. I totally agree that everything shud be ok'd by a hepatologist. It CAN be done... Karen

My husband too was diagnosed with the both hep c and cirrhosis back in 2007...in his case it was a triple liver whammy as he also had HCC, but good care and surveillance can be life-saving... he's still managing his cirrhosis fairly well.

First of all, be careful with anything you put in your body -- being cirrhotic, you don't want to mess around with any over-the-counter drugs or liver cleanses without clearing with your doctor first.  Organ meats as a rule are NOT good, as many are high in iron.  Avoid shellfish as well, as they tax the liver from both a filtering and cholesterol standpoint.  Avoid fats and oils as much as possible; steaming, broiling, baking without oils is the best option.

In addition to avoiding high fat, avoid salt... the standard FDA recommendation is 2000 mg of salt per day, but as a cirrhotic, you should cut that in half to 1000 mg per day.  Read labels and be aware of your sodium consumption... many canned foods are high in sodium content.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are best when possible, and maintaining adequate protein intake is important: beans, nuts, fish, and chicken are best; avoid red meats and organ meats.  It's also good to eat smaller meals more frequently, and it's important to keep adequately hydrated.

Hope that helps some, and it's good that you're educating yourself ... it's a devastating diagnosis to hear hep c and cirrhosis, but the face of management and treatment has changed a great deal for the better, and knowledge can be power.  Best of luck moving forward. ~eureka

You could get a liver cleanse kit, pills that you take to cleanse liver.  Check with your Doctor or Hematologist.  Eating Chicken liver cooked in olive and canola oil.  Salomon in the can is good to.

Welcome! Same here. When were you diagnosed? Did they tell you how advanced the cirrhosis is?
I would get on the web  n look up a liver loving diet. There's a lot of good websites out there. The liver is an amazing organ that can regenerate itself if the virus is stopped. Take care of you.. Karen
