Seizures during Menopause

by jebailey, Jul 03, 2009 03:20PM
I am a 62 year old epileptic.  I have had epilepsy for 60 years.  My seizures have always been under control until 1982/1983.  In 1982 the FDA approved the addition of soy to processed foods in America.  Everytime I eat a food that contains any amount of soy, soybean oil, soy sauce, soy lecithin, or hydrogenated soybean oil I will have a seizure.  I know that soy is estrogen.  It takes about 45 minutes for my body to metablize the soy and cause me to have a seizure.

I had a total hysterectomy in 1988 and I have no ovaries.  The ovaries is what produces progesterone.  My research has shown me that progesterone can stop a seizure that was started from estrogen.  Is this correct?

Back in the 80's, when I was having periods, I could always feel the aura of a seizure on the day before my period started.  My Neurologist, Dr. Victor Rivera, gave me 250 mg. of Diamox and I would take one pill every evening for 2 days just prior to the beginning of my period.  This seemed to remove all fluid from my system and I would have no seizures that month.

Now that there is soy in the food that we are eating, is it correct for me to assume that estrogen  is being put into my system and there is no progesterone in my system to halt the seizures that are being started.  Therefore, do I need to add progesterone to my system to halt these seizures?  I currently take 400 mg. of Tegretol twice a day, and could progesterone be taken with Tegretol safely?

I am currently under the care of Dr. Rivera and Dr. Alica Goldman here at the Dept. of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  We would all be interested in your opinion of this situation.  These doctors are neurologists, but they would be interested in the opinion of a gynecologist.  Thank you.
