Hi there,

Were you told O-bands should not show because if they do that would be bad? If this is the way your thinking I'd understand that. But, no matter if they show or not, hopefully the results will help your doc with the workup.

Metal-B: You have such a good doc.

Jerseyg: If you have o-bands, like mentioned they should be compared to your blood serum sample so it's known what origin they are from. We have an excellent health page on O-bands if you have the time to check it out.

When do you go for the LP?  Wishing you all the best for a speedy procedure w/no complications.

O bands are often present in the spinal fluid. What the doctors are looking for are O bands that are distinct inj your CSF that don't appear in your blood.  That is why when you have an LP they must take blood samples at the same time.

You've had an LP before? Was it recent?

My neurologist told me that the results of my spinal tap weren't going to change his approach to treatment....Since some of  the results take about a week to get, he started treatment immediately....So why take it then?...Because the other half of the results eliminate other possible diseases....Those results came back immediately....Since my doctor has been really aggressive, I find his judgement to be sound, he ordered a spinal tap for a reason, I would say it is a tool used for diagnosis....

Hummm...not sure exactly what you are asking but 0 bands would not mean much.  Many people with MS do not have bands on the lp.  The way my neuro explained it was just another test but it didn't matter what it showed.  I had MS.  Period.  For her it was just more proof of the MS for my files if 0 bands appeared...which mine did.  Had none been found it would not have changed the dx.  Maybe they just do it for proof to insurance companies?  I dunno.  I never understood why I had to take it.  I just had an instant trust with this neuro and did as she asked.
