Any help would be nice

I was recently sent to neuro for headache and vision problems.  I have went completely blind on two seperate occasions in both eyes.  I think it only lasts for about 5 minutes but seems like forever.  First bout was in 2001 and then again in July.  I had a normal MRI 3 years ago and last month MRI of the brain showed one lesion with a couple of signal intensities that the neuro says may be a couple of new lesions starting.  I was dx with optic neuritis in the right eye only and also qustionable afferent pupillary deffect.

I had a lp done 3 weeks ago but my neuro went on vacation and wont be back until the 9th of Nov. to go over the results.  I have access to the results but I think they are negative and I am going crazy.  I passed out the other night and loss bladder control, called the office and the office said they would leave a note for my doctor for when he returns.  I know my dr. wanted to do the lp before he left in case in needed steroids while he was out but it seems like no one else will talk to me there.

I did notice that I have 1 o-band in csf but also 1 0-band in serum so does that make it ok?  Also CSF Leuko was at 100% and CSF protein was elevated at 57.  Mylen protein was normal and I think everything else was normal.  Any help would be great.

Hi, You mention a couple different places about the worrying you are doing - just know that is very normal.  Every last one of us have spent time worrying while we tried to figure out what was going on, and especially when those words Multiple Sclerosis are first mentioned.

It is a lot to wrap your brain and emotions around.

While you are waiting for your neuro to return. please take some time to read through our health pages if you haven't already done so.  There is a wealth of information there and all of it will make your a smarter patient and probably a bit calmer too.  Knowledge is power, so take control.

I hope the wait for the next few days is not too bad- we're here if you have questions or just need to vent.

be well,
Lulu

Thanks for all the help.

I tried to call my dr again but I got the ...wait until your dr is back speach.  My pcp was suprised that the dr on call didn't do anything but she says she doesn't like to call to interupt other dr's days if they don't think something is important.  Oh well...I have 4 more days before my dr. is back.  I've waited this long.   Thanks again for all info.

I have to give a little background first.I have been dealing with vision issues and extreme migraines since this all started for me back in Jan'09. My neuro dx me with TM but I am now heading towards an MS dx because of brain lesions and some other issues.
I never had migraines prior to jan 09'. The first time it happened I thought I was having a stroke. I did not know what the heck was happening. I had severe vision problems in my right eye.Numbness on right side only. The right side of my face was drooped and I had severe eye pain.Could barely speak and when I did it was all wrong. Then the headache started. Went to ER had MRI and everything was normal.Or atleast I was told that.I was sent home...
Then back in July it happened agin but this one was 100x worse than the first one.But the big difference with this one was that my WBC was through the roof. It was 30,000. I did not have a fever or anything that showed any type of infection.I was told that it is typical to have an elevated WBC during severe migraines. They kept me overnight at the hospital. The next morning my WBC's were almost back to normal.Since then I have found out a lot about migraines and the different types. It is not uncommon to loose vision completely for short periods of time with certain types . They can cause everything from sezieurs to paralysis.Unfortunatly they are much worse with underline neurological didease.

I know that my neuro has been observing what is going on with me.  I have access to my computer chart and he has signed things since he has been gone including phone notes from when I called in to the office.  Maybe he isn't very concerned for some reason.  Since the dr. brought up that he is concerned with ms due to ON and brain lesion I can't seem to stop thinking about it.  Should I just not worry for now until he says more?  Also just wondering wich of my sx could be ms related?  I have burning sensations in my shoulder blade and down the middle of my back, vision blurring, eye pain (hurts to move my eyes), the fainting only once with the bladder loss (don't usually faint usually just dizziness), headaches, stumbling over feet, forgetfullness (seems to be getting worse).

Sorry not sure what is causing all of these or if any are related.  I hate waiting on doctors.

Maybe your GP should call them and explain the importance of seeing someone NOW! It's worth a shot....One more week is 7 more days of driving yourself crazy!

I think it is a practice of 5 or 6 dr's.  I've asked for another dr because I was told to do so by my pcp but they told me that it was something that could wait until my neuro got back.  I don't know if it is bacause I am a new pt and the other dr's don't want to dx me with something he doesn't agree with or what but it worries me.  I have waited for three weeks what is one more week right....

If you do have elevated protein and WBCs, you've got some kind of infectious process there. That aside, does this doctor not have a backup in his absence? Call and ask. Passing out and losing control of your bladder is not something to wait until Nov 9 to address. His office people are being pretty blase about that...wonder how they'd feel if THEY'd passed out and peed all over themselves.

I Impressionable,

Welcome to the forum. So sorry for what you are going through. Like Jens says, the band in the serum makes this negative.  Though csf is suppose to be support evidence for an MS dx.  We have a great chart in our health pages if you have a chance to look through them. They are located in the upper right hand corner of this page..

Passing out and losing your bladder or bowels is a significant event it can happen during seizures. Is there no coverage for this Dr. your have? If he's solo in his practice oftentimes they have another practice covering for them.

Yeah, a positive result is more o-bands in csf than in serum, so it means your LP did not register as positive.

However, LP results are not the final word on a diagnosis.
