more solumedrol? No luck.................

When I saw my MS specilaist for my once a year visit, he recommended that I take 2 days of solumedrol each monthe while I am off the betaseron trying to conceive dear child #3.  Well I have proof as of today that we failed this month.  This us much more of a letdown than I expected.  I as sure it is because I don't want to take the steroids again.  I feel bad for days and days after, and I am starting to hadt what it makes me look like.  Should I to the iv's or not?  I am only haveing mild symptoms, be he wants to use it as a preventative.  Advice????

I did a search, and guess what....solumedrol does cause minstrel irregularities.  No wonder my poor cycle is so messed up!  I am NOT taking it unless I absolutely need it.  I am 35 and I need my ovaries to work as well as they can!

I went for a run last night. My right leg (Achilles tendon) is killing me.  I did have several bouts of staph infection when I was younger, all in my right leg.  The first episode was in the lining of the bone......  I hope that the solumedrol and the run did not do more damage.

Thank you for weighing in on this.  I may be mistaken, but I think that the steroids that I had last month did something with my ovulation.  The Specialist could tell from the look on my face that I was concerned about taking them while trying to conceive.  He assured me that it was ok, but I just don't feel right about it.  I am going to talk to my husband tonight.

My personal choice is to not take the steroids this month and see what happens.  If I start into a relapse, I will take them next month and use contraception.  I had doses on day 1 and day 2 of my cycle last month, and began to feel better on day 13.  Today is the first day of my cycle, so if I were to take them, I would have to do it tomorrow and Saturday.

Thank you again,
Opie Ann

Hi, Opie, I had to step in here.  At first I thought the neuro wanted you to take the steroids during pregnancy and I was horrified at that prospect.

I believe you should discuss this with a top-notch perinatolgist, before you do it.  The steroids we take last a significant time in our blood streams - close to 2 weeks give or take a few days either way - varies with the person.  If you should conceive a week before the dose, the baby might be exposed to significant doses for up to three and a half weeks.  Steroids are powerful.  Yes, I have read the studies that show steroids are not associated with major birth defects (life-threatening) during pregnancy at doses of about 20mg of prednisone, which would be about 24mg of prednisolone.  They have been associated with higher rates of cleft lip and palate - during pregnancy.

I, myself, would want a perinatologist to clear me for use before conception, knowing that a dose "could" overlap with conception itself.

That is the pediatrician in me talking.

That is a tough decision for sure.
I have a hard time with the steroids too.  I have done 3 5 day treatments and the side effects are horrible.  I finished my last treatment 8 days ago and today is the first day I feel better. I still look awful.

Trying to have a baby creates a whole slew of emotional ups and downs on top of this disease.  I would really have to think about it.  I hope Quix will be able to come back soon and talk to you about it.

Take care

Quix takes steroids monthly, I believe, as a preemptive strike.  You might want to drop her a PM and ask her to comment when she comes back around.  For now she is off line, hopefully taking a long winter's nap.

There are down sides to the steroids, which you already know.  So this is not a decision to make lightly.

be well,
Lulu
