I have a UTI

Haven't had one of these since I was cathed after giving birth to our first son 7.5 years ago. I sort of thought something like this might be coming on, but woke up today with the obvious signs. Now I'm wondering if part of my "back" pain isn't really "kidney" pain. I do have hematuria, in addition to the WBCs, etc. Getting antibiotics this afternoon.

Sometimes, when I start to add up all the stupid things that have happened to my body over the last couple of years, I wonder how old I really am. I'm 40, but with the extracted thyroid, colon polyp, endometrial polyps, back problems, neurological problems, word slurring, word-finding problems, and now this...mustn't I really be about 70?

Sigh.

I think I would call the doc and check what they think.  Kidney and bladder function can go south must too quickly and I would rather be embarassed for overreacting than be on dialysis the rest of my life because Iwanted to tough it out.  Got it friend?  Lulu/Laura

I haven't had a UTI in MANY years, but I'm pretty sure that increased bleeding after beginning antibiotics is not normal and warrants a discussion with a doctor.

BS to the conversion disorder!  If you had the back pain preceding this, then I would guess that your kidneys have gotten into the act, wouldn't you?  Cipro is plenty strong, but it might not be right for you or for what you're fighting.  I hope you've called the on-call doc.

As for feeling old, some days I feel about 80, others about 12.  :o)  I still love to be a kid, have fun, and act silly, but my 46 year old body and all its issues kind of interfere.

Three of the adults in our party at Disneyland last week were laughing about discussing medications, aches and pains, BMs, and such at breakfast; the woman that just turned 40 thought we were all out of line and "acting old".  We all just looked at each other and grinned.  Her husband (extreme sports guy) was comparing pain meds with me; he's 5 years older than me, and I have the more potent meds.  Not a contest I wanted to win...

Anyway, you take care of yourself!

I had microscopic blood yesterday. Today, it's bright red, 24 hours after I started the Cipro. Honestly, I don't feel any better, either, which surprises me.

I had a UTI about 16 years ago (I've had three in my lifetime), and was peeing blood then. But it was easily better within a day of starting the antibiotic. With the back pain preceding this, my overall feeling of "inflammation," what now seems like "pain all over" (conversion disorder alert!), I think I'm fighting something that's getting bigger. But I don't think I have a fever...although I haven't checked.

Lulu, thanks for taking the time to respond. I'll let you know what's going on. We live about a quarter of a mile from an emergency room if it becomes necessary, so no worries there.

There should absolutely NOT be any bleeding from your bladder - call your doctor's on-call service number and leave a message to have him/her call.  If you don't get a call back in a reasonable time I would seriously consider going to either an urgent care facility or the ER, depending on your insurance.  Keep us informed as to what's up - bleeding is not right.  Were you bleeding before or is this new?

On my second day, third dose, of Cipro...and have *more* bleeding from my bladder. Frank, bright red bleeding. Um...should I wait to see if things are better tomorrow?

Have you taken cipro before?  perhaps you should contact your doctor and change to a different antibiotic.... just a thought if the Cipro is causing you problems.

I'm glad you made the sensible choice in your two options! LOL

Ugh. Cipro is gross. I don't like the way antibiotics make me feel. But then again..I guess I'd rather deal with that than die. Cipro or death?

Cipro. ;)

I took a deep sigh alone with you - I now have my second UTI in about 3 weeks after not having one since childhood.  Crazy, huh?  The antibiotics should knock it out in no time - I hope it stays away for you.

Feel better,
Lulu
