severe leg pain at nights

my mother has extreme leg cramps at nights this started 5 years ago she could not sleep at nights because of the pain.she took all kinds of pain killers then took mirapex nothing would help for years.   4 years ago because of the pain and the sleeplesness she fell on her back and broke her neck she was in a halo for 3 months still the leg pains continued. the next  year she fell again  and was giadnosed with progressive supra nuclear palsy she is now
in a nursing home. She cannot move , she cannot talk , she is extremely rigid but she still has those severe leg pains at night. What is worse now she cannot get up and walk to relieve the pain a little and she cannot speak , all she does is scream in pain all night long. We are very frustrated and sad. please tell us how we can releive her pain
and make her comfortable. right now she takes mirapex but i think she nedds something very strong otherwise she is going to lose her mind. thank you   mel

I, too, am so sorry to hear of your mother's suffering.  I know as her child, you feel helpless and just want to get your mother relief.

Lulu's post is right on.  It's time for the palliative care that a hospice center could give her.  This doesn't mean that you are sending her there to die.  This just means that these people are better able to help get a grip on her pain.  They are not afraid to try every drug possible to relief your mother's pain.  Hospice does some of the best work on this planet.  I cannot say enough good things about them

You need to take care of yourself too.  If you don't mind, I will include you and your family in my prayers.  Please keep us updated, if you need someone to share your feelings with.  I am so sorry that you and your family are going through such torment.

We are here for you if you need us...there are alot of soft shoulders on this Forum.  Feel free to use them....

Best Wishes,

Dear Mel,
First let me say how sorry I am that your mother is going through such torment with the leg pains and the other problems.  If it were my mom, I would be agressivelly looking for a doctor - possibly through hospice services - that does palliative care.  These doctors specialize in pain management for people with severe medical problems.

Working with these doctors or with hospice does not mean you are giving up on your mom, it just means that the medical treatment is not working and it is time to move on and try something more substantial in the pain relief.

I just heard a segment on modern palliative care on Sound Medicine last week.  That segment can be heard (March 22 edition) through this link

take care of yourself too!

I know  this is an old post so probably to late to comment and I'm asking a Q. Instead of answering yours, it may b me not reading it correctly but its not clear to me, did the mirapex have any positive effect regards to the muscle cramps or just the rls.?
