ms specialist but still in limboland

Hello all I went to a ms specialist and he told me that i am depressed and need counseling and that he isnt going to dismiss ms as of right now but needs more proof. what does that mean to me another 1 or more years waiting its only been 4 years now. so disapointing. my mri are stable they show several small lesions but no enhancment. he wants me to have evoked potentional testing and to follow up with a neuro-opthamologist. 2 weeks ago I had pain in my eye felt like my eye was gonna fall out last over a week and eye doc said optic neuritis. ms specialist said that if neuro-opthsaid optic neuritis then he will start treatment right away no ques asked.should i make appt or wait and see if pain in eye comes back again? and since pain is gone now will the specialist still be able to ee anything? thanks for your help

Hi Kat.  I'm glad you joined our forum.

OK, lets start off with whether you should go see the neuro-opth my suggestion is YES.  If someone has ever had ON then it can be verified by the N-O.  Next time you get that pain in your eye, run don't walk to an eye specialist. It is important to have a case of ON documented as you doctor mentined since it does help support a particular diagnosis.  There are few disorders that will cause ON.

Have you had a spinal tap yet?  Also, did they do an MRI of your spine?  Your doctor wants you to do the evoked potentials and that is a good idea.  Go ahead and schedule them.  You have to be willing to do what the doctor asks you to do so he will take your symptoms seriously.

As Lulu mentioned to you in your prior post, the white matter lesions on yoru MRI can be attributed to several other disorders.  The task at hand right now it to rule each out so you can get to the bottom of what is causing you symptoms.

Be strong right now and keep pushing for answers.

Hi Kat,
If we are honest with ourselves, I think almost every last one of us suffer a form of depression - who the heck wouldn't be depressed with having MS or hanging in Limbo like you have for so long?  Whether it is serious enough to warrant counseling is another thing entirely.

If you neuro put that out on the table as a possibility, you might want to go for a session or a few to at least appease the doctor.  Do it as a good faith gesture that you are willing to listen and follow his advice.  At least consider this, ok?

Julie is right about the ON. If you don't want to go right now,  if the pain reoccurs immediately get in for the neuro-opthamologist checkup.  Your neuro said he would treat you if it is ON and that really is good to hear.

don't give up yet - you know something is wrong,
