MS and Swine Flu

My apologies if this has already been covered - in fact I'd be surprised if it hasn't but couldn't find anything.

I notice from the literature that people with MS are included in those who will be on the priority list for the s f vaccine (when they have one) as they are included in those "at risk of serious complications from swine flu".

I don't understand why though. I can see than having s f could bring on a MS relapse but I don't see how having MS can make the flu worse.

I'm just curious.

Many thanks
Mand

Uk2 - I'm glad your daughter is starting to feel better, I hope no one else catches it.

Mrs A - I saw that doctor on TV this morning, The figures don't really seem to make sense, 1000,000 new cases in England over the last week, 1,200 in Scotland.

Weakandfalling - Thank you, I haven't heard yet how my neice is this morning, hopefully her Mom won't get it as she would be in the "at risk" category.

Yesterday there have been millions of people ringing the hot line for SF in UK it did crash actually well who would have thought LOL, anyway going off track, this doctor this morning was moaning about this system as she thinks it will be abused. She also said yesterday in her surgery alone they had 40 phone calls about people saying they had swine flu, she ONLY gave out 3 lots of Tamiflu. So out of 40 people - 37 probably just had a cold or similar. HOWEVER, she couldnt confirm that the 3 had swine flu but they were vulnerable so better to be safe then sorry.

Do you know what worries me about all this though is, IF lots of people are being misdiagnosed they are walking about thinking they are immune, when they simply had a cold or similar. So if this does happen and they have been given tamiflu for the wrong reason it probably wont work when they need it. Not only that it will give false figures and when we think we are in the clear, all the people who were misdiagnosed will probably catch it later towards the winter. The virus will never burn out at this rate. The best way to burn it out is to let it run its natural course.

I hope your daughter feels better, and yes it was awful about that lady in USA, but it happens here all the time you just dont hear about it so much.

Sorry, in my prior post I meant to say "I hope your niece and her MOTHER" are alright (a little tired now - time for my nappy-poo).  Making lots of mistakes - missed seeing and correcting that one.

I hope your niece and her other are alright and have a full recovery soon!

Imperfect as your phone-in system is in the UK, I like it far better than the system here in Utah (instituted by our Federal Govt.) that cruelly prevented that 40-year-old woman, (who was caring from her mother who had Swine Flu) from receiving the medicine that likely would have saved her life.  I hope the repercussions from that tragic case cause our govt. to rethink its position on TamiFlu and set up different criteria for its use.

Thank you, i hope your niece gets better soon.

Mrs A

Being in the uk i agree its silly my child was dx over the phone you are not allied to go out and the drs wont come out to you as they dont want to get it so you have a flu buddy who goes and collects the tamiflu if they feel you need it they felt we didnt, its been 3 days and she is already improving her temp has stopped and her bad headache and sore throat it seems to be a very mild illness in older children and adults the temp is the worst bit she was up to 41 c at one point but came through it. None of us have gone down with it thank god so i am not convinced it is swine flu they also leave it up to the individual drs to decide who gets the tami flu and who doesnt. without the test they do it could be any virus or her tonsils i would of liked to know for sure as we were all kept at home not that she wanted to go anywhere but i did not let my others go to play or others come round and my carers were worried it was swine flu too and my social worker and another appointment was cancelled as they thoguht it was swine flu but if i had known for sure i might have been able to avoid cancelling that appointment as she seems to of picked up quick for swine flu but they do say its 4-5 days and she is not fully recovered-anyway going on now.

I agree, being diagnosed over the phone or the internet is totally ridiculous.

My neice is really quite ill, all the symptoms including the stomach ones, last night her temperature was sky high, it is so wrong that her doctor wouldn't give her Tami-Flu yesterday and yet today anyone can phone and get it.

Oh well another one to chalk up to our wonderful NHS

The problem with the way that the UK is treating this outbreak is now they are not checking people to see if they do have SWINE FLU its all guess work. Its summer and loads of people last year in UK got bad summer cold with same symptoms, this year if you have a cold, cough, sore throat and a bit of fever your told you have swine flu with NO SWABS. One girl yesterday nearly died because she was told she had swine flu and got worse and worse and ended up in emergency and she had MENINGITIS.

This new service is going to be misused IF it works that is. I know of people who are ringing up the doctor taking the symptoms off the internet trying to get Tamiflu to take on HOLIDAY just in case they need it.

Now our surgery has said they will only offer Tamiflu for people who are vulnerable.

Why is it too that we can have Tamiflu for swine flu but not for normal influenza it is supposed to work on influenza not just one type.

Also the injections wont be ready so they say in the UK until late end of September and how SAFE WILL IT BE?

I am going to have my normal flu injection but as the swine flu is supposed to be so mild, I think I will take my chances. My hubby has been all over the place, brazil, portugal, up and down the motorway in the UK so if I was going to get it IF IT IS THAT bad in the UK then I should have had it by now.  Mind you I was born in 1951, my mum had the last pandemic flu in 1957 and at age 6 I did get that one mildly so perhaps I have some form of protection.

2 days ago my daughter felt hot and achey and if she had rung her surgery she would have been told she had swine flu. The reason she felt rank was because she had got herself soaked through riding nothing to do with SF. She felts tons better today.

I think in the UK we are getting distorted figures, as I wonder just how many people have SF versus normal summer cold, summer flu, viruses, meningitis and other things that are about in the summer months.

I have lost faith in our government allowing people to be diagnosed on the Internet is ludicrous to say the least.

That is so tragic, here in the UK we don't have the rapid flu test (at least not that i know of).

Our NHS - in England anyway - is starting a phoneline today, manned by NON MEDICS (you can see what I think of that!). People will be able to phone and say what their symptoms are and get a diagnosis over the phone.

They will be given a unique code number to collect Tami-Flu.

This is so open to mis-use but I realise that some of the strain has to be taken off doctors.

My neice hasn't been given Tami-Flu, the doc said she didn't need it. The irony is that from today she would be have able to get it simply by phoning the new phoneline.

Hi Sam
I hope your little girl is soon better, please keep us posted. My neice came down with it a couple of days ago, she is a bit better this morning, she is an adult, I am more worried about her mother who is looking after her, she is 61 and has other health problems.

I forgot to mention that, in the end, it was determined that the woman, indeed, died of swine flu.

Hi, all,

I've been so busy with my move etc.  Don't have time to write much.  Only will say that recently in Utah we had something really tragic happen:  A woman in her 40s who was taking care of her mother (the mother was sick with the swine flu) was refused TamiFlu medication because she had had three negative Rapid-Flu tests (whatever they're actually called).  Here the poor woman was living with her mother, taking care of her mother, and she was experiencing all the swine flu symptoms her mother had (duhhhhh!).  She and her family were begging the hospital people to give her the TamiFlu but the hospital people refused to give her any TamiFlu because of her three negative Rapid-Flu tests, saying that the U.S. govt. required a positive  Rapid-Flu test in order for TamiFlu to be given.  So, over a period of days, the poor woman's health declined until she finally died - and all because of an overreliance on tests and a complete non-use of common sense among medical people (sound familiar?).   Ironically, her mother, who had received TamiFlu, survived.

Thanks Lulu
I will definitely get the shot when they have come up with one.

I will search and find those discussions. - I believe that the flu shots are no longer "live vaccine" - that used to put me off having one but I think it was piece that Quix wrote that stated that, it could have been yourself, not sure, I will go back and find what I can.

Thanks again

Hi Mand,
Its not just the swine flu - it is any flu.  You;ve probably read some of the talks here about infections and exacerbations.

Heat makes our symptoms worse - imagine what a 102+ fever would do to you.

Our already over active immune system that is fighting our own body and myelin would also go into overdrive against the flu germs in our body.

All of us should get the annual flu shot -whether it is for the SF or any other strain.

Search this community and you will turn up other discussions about immunizations and their importance.

be well,
Lulu
