MS and Vasospasm Angina

by Eusssur, Aug 08, 2008 08:34AM
Anyone else?  Thought it was a MS hug, but no.  EKG was normal, stress test normal, CAT normal.  Dr. gave me nitro and it relieved the aching, heavy sensations and everything else that I thought was just my MS.  Angiogram showed that one coronary artery was going into spasm and closing.  Cause unknown but my MS or previous MS large dose steroid treatments (Pre-DM drugs) a possible connection.

hi euusssur,

i am not sure what i have been feeling would bevasospasm.
i actually remember the ffeeeling a long time ago too.

in past I have been woken in the night from sleep with the sharp pain a few timeee before, would that possible be a spasm?
i sometimes  have dry cough. I have asthma, and one doc thought it is my asthma, but i typically  wheeze with asthma, and this i don't

I have a small kinda achey (achy) uncomfortable feeling most always   in a small confined area of my chest.
I don't know  if it is my esophagus,,, ( it has problem with peristrolsis inthe thorac level) but i always felt it is my heart.

I   wore a 24    hour holter and a 2 week event monitr years ago. Never heard results on event monitor, and holter shoud only a couple short runs and some pvc and 'normal' things.
That stop in my tracks sharp pain doesn't happen so often, and not while    hoooked up.Normal echogram.

My next cardio work up i'll see if he thought that soundss    something like spasms.
nice to meet you, amo

There is lots of info on prinzmetal angina: quite different symptoms from the chest-clasping TV heart pain.  Good luck and stay persistent to rule out any dangerous medical condition!  Thanks for responding!

Can an artery go into spasm and close?  I thought that only happened with muscles?

by Quixotic1, Aug 08, 2008 05:41PM
All arteries have a layer of muscle around them.  This allows them to constrict and dilate as the body needs them to.  The Reynaud's Phenomenon is one of sudden srterial constriction when stimulated by cold.

So, yes, an artery, including the coronary arteries, can spasm enough to severely restrict the flow of bood to the heart tissue and cause an MI (heart attack).  This is not really common, but it certainly does happen.

Thanks for posting, Eusssur.  Would you tell us more about the symptoms of Prinzmetal Angina (coronary artery vasospasm)?

Quix

Wow, trippy!  Guess I'll go look and see which nerves go to the coronary arteries!  google google google...

I'm back!  It's the vagus nerve.

Quix, would damage to the vagus nerve cause an irregular heart beat?

Yep!
