Spasms and Cramps? in thumb?

Hello,

I hope evryone is well. I wanted to ask this question as I know one issue with MS is spasms/cramping. I am sort of still in limbo with probable MS right now.

I have had issues with cramping in left leg with calf and under my foot (in the arch) and they hurt like heck....but this is really weird and thought...This would really be the only place to ask about this without feeling like a total idiot..

Back in June or July I was giving my doggie a bath outside under thehose and as I was shampooing her I noticed my left thumb just cramped up and and remained bent (or cramped up and stayed bent) but I could not move it..the cramp lasted for about 2 hours..lessening with time and it took quite some time for me to be able to bend my thumb up staright...It hurt so bad.

I can not say I was scrubbing that hard..after a while it became black and blue...bruise right at the inside bend of my thumb..it was sore for a few days and finally returned to normal.

Well today I do not even recall doing anything and the same exact thing happened to my right thumb...now it too is bruised...the same as I described above.

Any thoughts of thumbs having spasms or is this truly a coincidence...I have NEVER had this happen in my life.

This is a weird one...I know

Many Thanks Jibs

Sound's  a lot like Writer's Cramp.  Writer's cramp is a "focal dystonia."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focal_dystonia

Focal Dystonias happen in MS.

Hello,

Nice to meet you, and thanks for your reply..It is almost like breaking a blood vessel...type of bruise..hard to explain..my tuhumb all of a sudden cramps up usually in bent position and I can not open it up for a while AND it hurts like HE@*..when it finally opens up a bit it is swollen at crease/ bend inside and tuns red and purple kinda like a bruise but once the cramp actually goes away..the color comes back too..

OMG..does it hurt..It was odd it happended 1 time on left hand but it is bizzarre to happen on the right side now AND only with my thumb...I am not really remembering any other fingers causing me havoc....

Thanks for the help!

Jibs - I will bring this up...to my doc

Hi Jibs,

Man do I feel for you... I also get these cramps along with the odd bending and twisting but no bruising and they don't last as long as yours... If they did I would probably be in the ER as bad as they hurt... I wonder if it bruises because it's in a jacked up position for so long?? That's what I think is causing the bruising... Listen to me, all my medical knowledge...bahahahaha

I also think you should tell your doctor about anything unusual... Even insignificant things to you might mean something to your doctor... If you feel like a whiner then who cares... I think we have every right to whine... Let us know what your doctor says and also if you do find out what is causing your bruising let us know that too... I personally like my theory...haha

I'll be praying,
Carol

Jibs,

I get them when cutting my food, scrubbing pots, etc., general focal exertion - AND just at rest, for no reason at all.

Jibby,

I have had this happen but it is was prior to having MS like symptoms. I felt a stinging, the area cramped up and then the bruise showed up. I asked my doctor about it at the time and he indicated that it sounded like I had somehow injured the area, weakened it and when I did another "act" that is when it showed the injury.

He told me to think of it like this: You hit an area and it managed to not fully damage the blood vessel but then a day or two later, you move a certain direction that causes further strain then that area ruptures and reflects the previous damage.  It's like sprang but it could be two incidences that created it.

Man, it hurt!

I also get twitching and hand cramping but I don't usually have brusing with it; though it can ache like it's bruised.

Thaks everyone,

I appreciate your feedback. I have been contemplating bring this up to my doctor at next appt again as I did mention the last episode to him but he did not feel it was toooo significant. but I think with this happening again it is worth it to discuss again. I have been trying to sift out what is important to report to him and what is not..you know .(I hate to seem like a whiner)

Gutarr girl - do you notice you get them when you are doing anything? My first cramp was washing dog..although it was not really any big deal..this second time I was walking along and felt my thumb killy me so I was not really doing anything with my hand...rrgg

Bob  - Thanks for the link..your knowledge is amazing to me ;o)

JJ - you are right my life is no longer dull...

Many Thanks

Hmmm are you saying we're weird? ROFL!

Okaaaay, i do think of my self as being the queen of weird land lol, so here is my take on what might be at play. The bruising has my attention mainly because i get spontaneous bruises mainly hands but sometimes my ankle too. I more often than not, notice the pain first, sort of feels like i've hit my hand with a little hammer, its puzzling because there isn't a reason for it at all. Then i notice the bruise, its a bright vivid blue, in time it changes to the greenie yellow as it fades away.

I'm told they are superficial veins blowing out, though i've been fully cheched lol and i do mean fully checked but there is NO expanation for it, at all. hmmm weird lol when they happen on my ankle, they are a deeper blue, more purple sort of like what happens when you sprain your ankle, it feels like that too but i haven't done anything, its just the bruise.

My hands tremor all the time now, I dont actually get spasms in my hand but cramping and twisting of my fingers sometimes, though not often enough to stay on my radar, i do prefer to forget what I can. My left foot sizzles though not sure if thats spasming or not, it is a very fine hrts if it is, more weird in a long line of weird lol. Do you think it could be something like what i've described?

Welcome to the wonderful world of weird land lol life is never dull!

Cheers...........JJ

Hi, Jibs,

I get spasms in my thumbs, too.  Sometimes the other digits, but mostly the thumb.  Left hand.

Thanks Mills...

As far as my cramping in hands it is pretty much just happening to my thumbs..very weird as I have never experienced this before...

(The leg cramps are bad enough)

Thaks for your input

Hi Jibs, I have had instances of cramps in fingers, no specific one, and it would either bend or straighten out and remain like that, but just a few seconds maybe minutes, and yes it hurt, but no bruising. I do have cramps and pains under my feet, especially the arch and my toes. MS is really unpredictable! No easily diagnosed nor understood. I hope someone could provide you with more insight on this...and no question is silly question here :-))

Take care
