Quick question...

I don't really want to lug my sharps container with me on the airplane..

is there another to keep your needles while traveling?

There's no need for any sharps container with a BD clipper.  You clip the needle part off and through the glass syringe in the trash, so the only thing that you have is this little blue thingy without any needles to stick you or sharps container.  A friend of mine suggested this to me after her flight back from Chicago.  She said that they really, really didn't like the needles in the sharp container and suggested this clipper thingy.

When I travel I always pick up a small Sharps container.  It is about 6 inches tall, and about 4 inches on each side.  It is small enough to fit in the end pouch of my duffle.  They are only about 4 dollars (American) at WalMart.

To carry my insulin, etc I found a bag that is made by Playtex.  It is intended for baby bottles.  It has a couple plates that freeze when placed in a freezer.  The small outside pocket holds my test kit, insulin, etc., and the larger pocket is perfect for a couple bottles of Glucerna and a small bag of nuts.  It stays cold for about 8 hours.  I just love it.

I hope this helps.

I have the solution--BD clipper.  Diabetics use them, but they work for my Copaxone needles.  I took the device with me on the plane to Europe and back, and got through security with my 90 day supply of Copaxone syringes and the BD clipper.  It holds many needsles.  I've had one for about two years, and it's not filled up.

See a picture of it on the web site:

Meg, call SS TODAY and ask for the travel kit.  They have a great hard-sided, zippered container that will hold your syringes and it even includes a new auto-injector.  It is a great safe way to carry your meds.

As for the other drugs, I like to go with the containers and my husband takes his pill organizer.  Neither of us have ever had the first question asked.  Be sure you put them in your carryon luggage and do not check your drugs.  The temp extreme in the cargo hold on the plane will kill your copaxone!

You can also ask them about a travling sharps container.   I use an empty water bottle to hold mine.

What fun - this should be a great time for you and Memphis is a fun town to visit.  Enjoy the blues and the BBQ!

Hey,

If you are with Shared Solutions then they will send you a container to travel your needles. they sent me one, it holds 5 I think, it is hard plastic so they dont break either. they told me if I needed another one to call them and they will send me one. they also sent me a lock box for my fridge that holds the syringes and the "key" is magnetic and high on the fridge so my little ones cant get into it.

Maybe this will help.,

enjoy your trip!!

Shell, you are a sweetie !!

All good suggestions...I am going to Memphis with a friend and we will be visiting another friend.   We will not be in a motel.  Its my first time out of California as an adult, except for Nevada and Hawaii....and i do not fly now!!

So it is an exciting trip for me...been working on feeling as well as possible for the trip.

The bottle seems a good idea though..I will check with SS too.

I am confused about medication now...I read that you have to take all your original med bottles with you and then I read you could take your organizer ...if anyone knows anything about that, let me know.

I only have 11 days now to pack...and i had planned on having more done by now..i better get something started..

hugs, meg

When I 1st received my meds I received a small kit. With this kit came a small container for sharps for travelling, alcohol, etc. and a mini ice pack that slips in a little slot. It's all contained and perfect for travel.

Like mentioned above you can call your filling pharmacy or call the shared solutions or ms lifelines (forgetting which DMD you are on) and ask them for a travel kit.

Heck, I'll call mine for another if you can't get your hands on one and ship it to you!

Ess gave you a great idea, a simple water bottle + putting in checked luggage. I used to put them back in the same disposable wrap they came out of and carefully put them in my pouch, but only did that one trip until someone told me about the water bottle.

Sometimes you don't even have to take them back home with you. A few weeks ago when I was out on training for work, I asked the hotel for a fridge in the room and lo and behold, there was a sharps container in the door of the fridge.  Of course we don't necessarily need a fridge to store our meds, but I still feel better putting them in there if I have access to one.

Are you planning a trip soon?  If so, hope you have a good time.

Yes, best to put the bottle in your checked luggage.

As for the syringes, make sure you bring the prescription label to show security. They've never asked about mine, but ya never know.

You can also get a small thing for sharps from your local pharmacy. My pharmacist was telling me about it. He could order it.

That's a great idea!  I like those heavy-duty bottles, like a small bottle of liquid Tide, or fabric softener.  You might have to show the airport that it's empty!

An easy solution is to take a small water or soda bottle with you. Drop sharps into the empty bottle and recap tightly. When you get home, dispose of the bottle as you do the container.

Oops I guess I should have mentioned that I then put the zip lock package in an inside zipper compartment wrapped in a wash cloth. Then take it home and dispose of in the big sharps container at home.

I usually bring paper towels and a zip lock bag. Put the cap back on the needle when you are done, wrap it in the paper towel so it won't break and put it in the baggie.

Have fun wherever the airplane is taking you!

Hugs,
Erin :)

Meg,

Sorry I can't offer any ideas for you but thought I would bump this up so others might be able to give you some.
