handi capped parking tag?

I WOULD NEVER CONSIDER DOING THIS IF I DIDN'T HAVE 4 CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES BUT I AM WONDERING IF MS IS CONSIDER A CONDITION WHERE YOU CAN GET A PARKING TAG.

EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A DIAGNOSIS I STILL HAVE TO TAKE MY CHILDREN TO SEE THEIR DOCTORS AND THERAPISTS. THE THERAPISTS HAPPEN TO BE ON A HILL. THE PARKING LOT IS DOWN THE HILL. YOU HAVE TO WALK UP THE HILL TO GET INTO THE BUILDING IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TAG.  I AM NOT SURE I CAN MAKE IT UP THAT HILL ANY MORE.

I HAD TO WALK UP THE HILL A VERY SHORT DISTANCE LAST MONTH AND IT WAS SO DIFFIUCLT!  MY RIGHT LEG IS JUST A MESS RIGHT NOW. ANYWAY, WOULD IT BE AWFUL OF ME TO APPLY FOR ONE OF THESE TAGS?  DO I NEED MORE THAN AN MS DX?

First off, it would not be awful for you to apply for a disability tag. Goodness gracious, with what you are going through and then 4 disabled children, you more than qualify in my eyes. I do think that a MS diagnosis is enough to get one for you. I see no reason that you wouldn't qualify. I am in Canada though so not sure how things apply to where you are. I know others will chime in who can help you better.

Goodness sakes LA, I agree, you should get one as soon as possible. I have one with 'only' my diabetic neuropathy degree ;-p
It is good to have for when you need it. If you feel like you don't happen to need it on certain days, you can park in the regular spaces. This is what I do, and this way, if I'm having a bad spell and need it, it is there.
My doc. wrote the prescription and I took into the BMV. It was like $3 here.

You are well within your rights to apply and MS is sufficient. I have  a permanent one and I don't  even drive any more. My husband would put it in the window if I was in the car with him, as my walking is limited.  He would not use it without my presence. My doctor's office filled in a form and my husband took it up to the Department of Motor Vehicles. They give you a permit to display in the window and it is good for 4 years before renewing it.  Your doctor will know what boxes to check on the form. Mine is permanent. Some are temporary. Hope that helps.

LA,

If you live in the US your doctor will have the form to take to the DMV and get a tag. It's really easy and don't feel bad for getting one, you want to save your strength for your children and not wasting energy walking from tim-buck-two. My husband calls it "Rock Star Parking". lol. It helps me conserve energy for more important things. Get one and don't feel bad. You'll be glad you did.

Big Hugs,

Thanks so much everyone!  By the time I get my 4 children out of the van and into strollers I am wiped out!!!  To be honest I can not even handle pushing a stroller right now.  I always have help with me as much as I can.

Well, I guess I will be applying for that tag!!  I am due to renew my lisence anyway.

Oh, I am in the US.

If you don't mind me asking, what type of challenges do you children endure?  I guess that I ask, to try to better understand what you endure, day in and day out in addition to YOUR own physical problems.

If you don't care to share information about your children, I certainly understand and I apologize upfront for my intrusive question.

HELLO,
WELL, MY 4 CHILDREN ALL HAVE DOWN SYNDROME. TWO OF THEM, 2 AND 4 YEARS OLD,  ARE STILL SMALL AND NEED TO BE IN A STROLLER.

BOTH OF THEM WEAR BRACES ON THEIR FEET BECAUSE OF WALKING DIFFICULTIES.

MY 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WITH DOWNS HAS NO UNDERSTANDING OF WHY SHE SOULD NOT WALK OUT IN FRONT OF A CAR.

I HAVE TO WATCH HER LIKE I WOULD A YOUNG CHILD.

THE SAME IS TRUE FOR MY 9 YEAR OLD SON WITH DOWNS, ONLY HE HAS FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME  AND WAS BORN ADDICTED TO CRACK ALONG WITH DOWNS. (HIS BIRTH MOTHER WAS A MESS)

HE HAS MAJOR ISSUES. HE WILL NOT WALK IN THE RAIN. HE WILL NOT WALK ON ANY PAINTED LINE OR CRACK.

HE STEPS OVER EVERY SINGLE ONE!  HE IS A LITTLE LIVE WIRE AND MELTS DOWN ALL OF THE TIME. THE CLOSER WE ARE TO THE DOOR THE BETTER.

USUALLY A 9 AND 11 YEAR OLD WOULD BE HELPFUL, BUT IN MY SITUATION THEY STILL NEED AS MUCH HELP AND SUPERVISION AS THE YOUNGER ONES.

IT IS A CIRCUS AND WE WERE VERY LIMITED IN WHAT WE COULD DO EVEN BEFORE I STARTED HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME PHYSICALLY. NOT IT IS JUST CRAZY! THE BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS AND LACK OF UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS BEING ASKED REALLY MAKES THINGS DIFFICULT AT TIMES.

I CAN NOT GO OUT BY MYSELF WITH THEM ANY MORE.

KITT, I HAVE MY FORM FILLED OUT AND READY TO GO TO MY DOCTOR!

THEY ARE ALL ADOPTED. MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE TWO BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTERS. ONE IS 24 MARRIED HAS A NEW BABY. THE OTHER IS 22 LIVES AT HOME AND WILL GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE THIS MAY.

WE WANTED TO TRY FOR A BOY BUT SINCE BOTH GIRLS WERE HIGH RISK PREGNANCIES WE DECIDED TO ADOPT.  GOD BLESSED US BEYOND ANYTHING WE HAD IMAGINED WHEN WE DECIDED TO ADOPT...FIRST CAME OUR OLDEST SON. A BEAUTIFUL 9 DAY OLD BIRACIAL HEALTHY BABY BOY!

THE AGNENCY CALLED US AT 11 AM AND HE WAS IN OUR ARMS BY 6PM THAT DAY.  WHEN HE WAS ONLY 3 MONTHS OLD WE GOT OUR CALL ABOUT OUR FIRST CHILD WITH DOWNS.

SHE WAS ONLY 3 WEEKS OLD WHEN WE BROUGHT HER HOME.  WE HAD NEVER CONSIDERED TAKING A SPECIAL NEEDS BABY. ESPECIALLY NOT ONE WITH SUCH SPECIAL NEEDS. BUT STEVE AND I SAW HER AND COULD NOT RESIST!

WHEN SHE WAS 18 MONTHS OLD WE GOT A CALL ABOUT OUR 9 YEAR OLD SON. HE REALLY NEEDED A HOME. HE WAS GOING TO GO INTO FOSTER CARE AND HIS PROGNOSIS WAS NOT GOOD IF HE ENDED UP THERE.  HE WAS ABOUT 4 WEEKS OLD WHEN HE CAME HOME.

IN 2002 WE GOT A CALL ABOUT A BABY GIRL WITH DOWN WHO NEEDED OPEN HEART SURGERY. THE OTHER KIDS WERE 4, 5, 5 AND WE DECIDED WE WERE READY FOR ANOTHER BABY. SHE WAS 2 MONTHS OLD.

THAT WAS A REAL ADVENTURE! WE DROVE FROM INDIANA TO MANHATTAN NEW YORK TO GET HER. THEY WOULD NOT LET US FLY BECAUSE SHE WAS ALREADY IN CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE AND HAD PULMUNARY HYPERTENSION.

WE GOT HER HOME AND WITHIN A FEW WEEKS SHE HAD SURGERY. WE FOUND OURSELVES LIVING AT THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE FOR OVER A MONTH WAITING FOR HER TO RECOVERY FROM HER SURGERY. SHE HAD A TERRIBLE TIME COMING OFF OF THE VENT.  WE WERE NOT SURE SHE WAS GOING TO MAKE IT.

SHE CAME HOME WITH A FEEDING TUBE. I LEARNED HOW TO INSERT NG TUBES.  YUCK!

THEN IN 2005 WE GOT A CALL ABOUT A HEALTHY BABY BOY WITH DOWN WHO JUST NEEDED A HOME.  WE ALREADY HAD TWO GIRLS AND ONE BOY WITH DOWNS. WE DECIDED TO EVEN THINGS OUT! :)  HE WAS ABOUT 4 MONTHS WE WE BROUGHT HIM HOME.

ALL OF THE KIDS ARE U.S. KIDS.  HOW DO WE DO IT? WITH GODS HELP!  THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ME. I WANTED A LARGE FAMILY. WE HAVE BEEN SO VERY BLESSED TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RAISE 7 CHILDREN FROM INFANCY!

THEY ARE A LOT OF WORK AND I AM TIRED NOW THAT THIS MS HAS HIT. BUT WE HAVE A VERY GOOD SUPPORT SYSTEM.  I HAD MADE SURE THE KIDS WERE ALL SIGNED UP FOR ANY PROGRAM THEY MIGHT GET HELP FROM. SO THAT IS DONE.

WE HAVE A WILL AND TRUST IN PLACE FOR THE FUTURE. I HAVE ALL OF THE DIFFICULT THINGS DONE. WE HAVE GONE TO COURT SEVERAL TIMES FOR DIFFERENT THINGS.  IT WAS A REAL STRUGGLE GETTING SOME OF THEIR SERVICES SET UP, BUT THAT IS ALL DONE AND IN PLACE NOW.

MY DAYS CONSIST OF GETTING THE KIDS TO THERAPY AND DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS.  WE HAVE ONE IN SCHOOL RIGHT NOW. I ANTICIPATE TWO MORE GOING TO SCHOOL.

OUR SON WITH FAS HAS SOME AUTISTIC ISSUES AND DOES NOT DO WELL IN A CLASS ROOM SETTING. SO HE IS HERE AT HOME AND REALLY DOING VERY WELL.

SO, THAT IS ABOUT IT.  I GOT A CALL LAST WEEK ASKING IF WE WOULD TAKE ANOTHER BABY.  I WOULD LOVE TO DO THAT, BUT GOD HAS CLOSED THAT DOOR AND I AM OK WITH THAT. :-)

KITT, IT HAS HELPED THAT I HAVE A TYPE A PERSONALITY AND A TOUCH OF ADHD!!  ;-)

I DO NEED TO HIRE SOMEONE TO HELP CLEAN NOW. I CAN NOT DO IT ANY MORE. THERE ARE THINGS I HAVE GIVEN UP IN ORDER TO TAKE THESE CHILDREN. MOST DAYS I AM FINE.  ONCE IN A WHILE I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO GO SHOPPING BY MYSELF.

BUT AT THIS POINT, I AM NOT EVEN UP TO THAT.  RIGHT NOW I JUST WANT TO SLEEP! ;-)

Wow, I can't even IMAGINE that! What a blessing YOU are to all those kids! Your 3 oldest deserve special credit too, because the younger ones need so much of you and your husband.

Can you hire someone to clean? If that isn't feasible, maybe church members can pitch in and make you a special project. I'm sure you're already worn out just with laundry, cooking and all the other stuff that families need.

I send all my best to you and your wonderful family.

THANKS!!  WE TRY TO BE VERY AWARE AND VERY CAREFUL HOW MUCH WE EXPECT FROM THE OLDER 3 CHILDREN. THEY HAVE GIVEN A LOT SO THAT THEIR YOUNGER SIBLINGS CAN BE TAKEN CARE OF.

I AM GOING TO GET SOMEONE TO CLEAN AT LEAST TWICE A MONTH.  I DO NEED THE HELP NOW. I THINK I HAVE WORN MYSELF OUT!

I WOULD NOT BE HONEST IF I DIDN'T ADMIT THAT THIS IS NOT ALWAYS EASY OR FUN. BUT FOR THE MOST PART THINGS ARE GREAT.  JUST LIKE RAISING ANY CHILD.

THE ONE THING I REALLY WANT TO DO AND HAVE NOT DONE SINCE WE WERE MARRIED OVER 25 YEARS AGO IS TO GO AWAY WITH MY HUSBAND. EVEN IF I CAN JUST GET 3 DAYS WITH HIM SOMEWHERE NICE, LIKE THE BAHAMAS OR SOME WHERE.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS MS IS GOING TO TAKE ME. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO MAKE SURE I GET THAT DREAM TRIP WITH MY HUSBAND WHILE I STILL CAN.

If only....if only you and I lived near each other, I would come clean for you. And watch the children while you and dh went to the Bahamas.

My dh and I are going through the process of being approved for being Foster parents for infants while their adoption paperwork is finalized. We've had to go through the issues of getting UV lighting so our well water is bacteria-free for bottles. That will be next week. Then we will go to Infant CPR classes. I can't WAIT to help the babies! We put down on the form that we are open to accepting every single baby that needs help, God will help us learn to meet their needs.

Jjust as an aside; it makes me nervous that any anxiety or MS issue will derail this dream!)

God Bless you and dh and your entire gang! :-)

Hey! That is great!  Don't let the possiblity of MS stop you.  You can still do this.  The one thing about foster care that is different than adoption is you can take a break if you need it.  I think foster care would work just fine for some one with MS.

Isn't the process for adoption/foster care the most intrusive thing you have ever been through?  Our social worker knows more about me than my own parents!!!

Yeah, kind of felt weird to bring up my childhood, courtship, relationship issues, etc. And to know dh was writing about me, and I about him; I made us compare answers, lol.

You're right on the taking a break part- if needed, it's there.

Now. About taking a break! Do you get respite help? Through DMR? (Well, up here in CT it got changed to DSS, Dept. of Special Services.) At the very least, you can have someone who is trained come and offer you some relief for an evening or afternoon. I don't know specifically because we've never used it for our autistic/retarded girls. But it is a service that is there. Then again, you said you have a good support program, I'm sure you don't need me telling you how it works!

We didn't get respit as part of their adoption assistance program here in Indiana.  But I do have them signed up for the Medicaid waiver and respite is avalible with that program.
The only thing is there is a crazy waiting list.  I think my two older ones still have about 2 more years before they will have a spot on that waiver list.
You are right, I have never had to look out side of my family for help. I did just recently ask a close friend of mine if her daughter would be interested in baby-sitting for me. She is 16 now and I think she could handle the kids. She is the oldest of 6 siblings herself!
