mitral valve procedure

This forum is like a ghost town today...unless it takes the day off for New Years.  I talk about everything here because I know you and you don't feel like strangers to me.

I had my mital valve procedure today and i have mitral stenosis but I still must wait til next week to see my personal cardiologist , the procedure was done by another card.  He did say it would account for the fatigue and breathing problems etc. i am having.  Along with the fatigue i have had with the MS I have been a much more fatigued recently so much so that I cannot even walk around in the house without having to crash again.

Once again, i find myself confused with all that is going on with me.

Anyone else experienced anything like this and have anything to share with me?

well, i hope my cardiologist is concerned, he was concerned enough to start the tests..
will keep you posted, i dont see him until next Monday unless he calls.

In a word, nuttin'.  Docs haven't seemed concerned enough about that particular problem.

Switched me to carvedilol for the PAC's, deleting the ....  I have to start writing this stuff down.  Deleting whatever drug they had me on before for my blood pressure.  Norvasc, maybe.  Yeah, I think so.  Seems to be helping the PAC's, and my ankles aren;t as swollen.  BP's better than it was, but still up & down in & out of good ranges.

I think we have just the opposite mitral valve problem.  Not sure but I believe mine is moderate, which in any case it can be treated with surgery or meds.  

I also have had fatigue for a long time and its 24/7..and i use nuvigil for it.  But now its so much worse that I can't do much.  And finally I know why I can't breathe good....

What are they doing for your valve problem?

Learned very recently that my mitral valve is leaking, but it is described as "mild."  The report I saw spoke not of thickening, but thinning of ...  Oh, blast it, anyway, I don't remember!  I think it was the muscles of the ventricle wall at its apex, near the mitral valve.  Anyway, docs don't seem especially concerned about it.  Fatigue has been a part of my life for quite a while, though.

Surgery doesn't ALWAYS cause the MS to flair - and besides, don't you suspect the stress and physical problems  from feeling cruddy is doing something to your MS already?  

Talk about all these concerns with your doctors , Ok?

Thanks, Lulu, thats pretty much what i have read. And the doc who did the procedure also said he thinks it may have been from rhumatic fever i may have  had as a child...also, I have always had a heart murmur which they always said was not a big deal.

I will find out more when I see my own card....

You now what I worry about the MS with that kind of surgery...it would  exacerbate the MS symptoms big-time, no?

Hi Meg,
From what little I know about mitral valve stenosis, this is very treatable.  The stenosis is a thickening of the valve that interferes with it functioning correctly.  This usually causes what we know as a heart murmur - when the blood is not flowing properly from chamber to chamber in our hearts.

When the heart does not function correctly with moving our blood into the different chambers, exhaustion is almost always the first symptom.  Its no surprise that you are even more tired with this malfunction going on.

This thickening usually comes from some sort of disesase, such as rheumatic fever (I had RF as a child, but no stenosis).  It can also be caused by infection.  

Regardless of the cause, it is treatable.  There are a couple options, including the replacement of the mitral valve.  I have a friend who had this procedure done and it made all the difference in her health and activity level.

I'm sure your cardio will be happy to explain all of this when you meet again.
