LP done this morning

Hello everyone,

I had my LP today, the internist who did it was very good. I didn't even know when he inserted the needle. I only felt some mild pinching when he was injecting the lidocane. Yeah! I'm so happy it's done. I'm laying in bed right now.. my back is very stiff. No headache yet, just lightheaded a little. I peaked at my vials of CSF and they looked clear. Can the naked eye see anything? Just wondering..

It soundsl ike yo uwill be a "positive" LP story around here.  The headached can come within minutes of the LP or even by the next day, so stay on top of the fluids and you should be ok.

Lu is right, my doc said the same thing that you can take a shower whenever you feel up to it even the same day.

And, clear fluid is a good sign, but wait till all the results are in and go from there.

Wishing you continued headache-free days...

You can shower as soon as you feel up to it.  My doctor told me there wasn't any need to stay flat - just to drink fluids.  So as you can see, there is mixed information out there.  Just do what you feel comfortable with and know if you become uncomfortable to lay down.

my best,
Lulu

As far as there being complications with the puncture site - I do not know of any.  My doctor suggested I lay flat for 24 hours to let the hole inside your body heal.  There are many people on here who have not had a problem with the LP or get the headache but I tried to do too much too fast & got the headache so even getting up to use the restroom was hard to do!

Not sure that helps you out - just my experience.

Be well!

Thanks you guys.. I couldn't wait to get home to let you all know it went really well. My husband was so happy everything went well too. He was really worried, when the test was done I asked my husband if the dr had started it yet. After I said this smilling of course,  my husband looked like he was going to fall over.

Ok, so I just returned from the hospital again.... the lab called me to say the didn't have enough of my blood to complete all the testing. CRAZY... so I had to get dressed and drive back up to the hospital and give more blood. I guess this was better then having to redo the LP...

It's been long laying here today but my back is getting really still, I'm finding it hard to find a comfortable position..

When can I have a shower??? Hopefully someone replies to this tonight..

Thanks to all of you around here for me today :)  My husband is gone to work now so my little man is helping me out.

Yay! It's done!

Now stay flat as long as you can - I'm glad it went well.

It's the days after you have to worry about.  You don't want the leak. Drink - LOTS!

Stay flat longer than they told you - k?

Be well!

I'm glad you had a good experience.  Normal spinal fluid is always clear - but you can't see the components that would be specific for MS or other conditions.

Take in a lot of fluids.  I hope someone is there helping you.  I was told that caffeine was good to drink after spinal tap.  I never did have a headache - just other issues.

The only abnormals the naked eye would be able to see are the tinge of blood if there were any or if it was cloudy.  That's all I know for sure.  ~K

I can't answer your question but I wanted to tell you HI & YEAH for a good LP.  Now the mother in me will come out - LAY FLAT FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN, DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS & '"IF" YOU GET THAT BLASTED HEADACHE - CALL YOUR DOCTOR FOR A BLOOD PATCH!  Now that I have lectured you  :)  Take care of you & heal fast.  Let us know how it goes.
