tests

ms is diagnpsed as far as I know, ruling out other things and an mri which only shows lessions in the brain.  Has anyone else ever been tested in order to rule out other things?  I personally never got tested for anything else.  Don't you think they should?

I am in the process of being diagnosed right now and they have tested me for Lymes, other autoimmune disorders, thyroid disease, vitamin levels and more that I cant remember right now. I thought that was a normal part of the diagnosing process as there are many other things that can mimic MS. They want to be sure that they have ruled everything else out before giving that Dx.

Hi and welcome.  Yes, your doctors definitely should test for other diseases because there are many mimics of MS.  And I do mean MANY!!  When you were tested initially, did they draw lots of vials of blood?  They run many tests from those samples that can eliminate other diseases from the differential.

You say you think it is MS, but has the medical person told you this?  MS can be a lengthy diagnosis to make and especially is areas such as Canada, they want to be absolutely sure before they start you on the treatments.

good luck and stay in touch,
Lu

Hi and welcome...they definitely should rule out all other diseases because so many of them mimic MS that it is the only way to be even close to an MS dx.

Lu said it all really..

good luck, meg

There are other things that can cause lesions, so ensuring you don't have any of the mimics is indeed important. Treating the wrong disease can be harmful.

Hi Ylow,

I echo the rest! Yes, lots of tests, and even if all mimics are ruled out, you may, or may not be dx'd with MS. It's just that difficult a disease to dx.

MS is not a dx of exclusion.
There are many things clinically, in addition to labs, and imaging that prove MS to a doctor. Sometimes, unfortunately it's takes time.

Hang in there, and know there are many here who can lend an ear, or good info as needed.
