what are my options

i saw my incontenance nurse yesterday and she told me that the neuro i saw was not even a consultant but a gp with an interest in ms.
She gave me the name of a specialist neuro who she says is quite forward thinking with a wealth of experience.
BUT do i have the right to request a second opinion as i am on the N.H.S. in Scotland ,United Kingdom.
PLEASE can somebody help as i am at my wits end with all of this happening :( .

Hi there and welcome to the Forum.

I'm from the UK too, and yes you can ask to see as many consultants as you wish as long as you have a referral letter from your GP (if you go privately this is not necessary).  The MS Nurses have a wealth of experience and know which Consultants are the best.

I'm from Wales, so I don't know of a good Neuro in Scotland, also if you get in touch with your local MS society they will point you in the right direction on who is the best in your area. Just call them, and they will tell you.

That is where I would start.

Hope this helps,

Debs

Hi Chris,

I'm also in the UK. I know we can choose which consultant we'd like to see once we get a referral from our GP. Can you go back to your GP and ask them to refer you to the neurologist you've been suggested by your nurse?

Good luck!

Hi Chris,
The NHS works in such MySterious ways I hate to second guess and answer for you.

Does the referral to the consultant have to be made by the GP since you don't have private insurance?  I'm thinking it goes that way for you.

I do know that either side of the pond, the squeeky wheel gets the grease - you need to be persistent in asking for the referral and get that done.

Please don't lose your wits over this - you will need them to navigate the diagnostic process.

I'll look for you around with more questions.  BTW, we have many members here from the UK and I'm betting they can hep you with understanding the NHS process.

be well, Lulu
