I had a dermoid cyst removed just over a year ago now. I had one on each ovary, both of them just a little bigger in diameter than yours. I had to have laprotomy surgery to remove them, which stopped me from driving, lifting, reaching, or pulling (anything which will pull on your stomach muscles) for 6 weeks. I returned to work after two weeks, only because I have an office job, so I can sit down a lot, but it was probably about 4 weeks before I felt a lot better and could move around more easily.
Good luck!
It sounds worse than it probably is. I had a 10cm dermoid removed it was too big to get it laproscopy so I had a laprotomy surgery. I was out of work for 5 weeks. Yours is probably small enough to have a laproscopy which is a smaller incision. You don't want a dermoid to rupture inside of you so I am sure your doctor would want it removed right away. These are usually present at birth and usually non-cancerous. Your dr. wants a CA-125 to see certain levels in your blood to check for ovarian cancer. Good Luck hope all goes well.
Yes, you will most likely need to have the dermoid cyst removed. It is the nature of the cyst that it will not simply disolve as some other cysts will sometimes do.
But, the good news is that dermoids are rarely cancerous. A dermoid is a strange type of cyst, however, and basically consists of cells that should have formed in/on other parts of the body.. I think of them as body parts that 'landed in the wrong place.' Some dermoids mostly consist of fatty tissue, but do not be surprised or alarmed if you learn there is hair or even a tooth in your dermoid. NO, it is not a baby that did not form from an egg. A dermoid has nothing to do with reproducing a child!!
I just posted at length to kc1987 (I think that is her username!) about typical surgery to remove a non-cancerous cyst. Your experience will likely be the same, so you might wish to read that posted comment. There are other good posts on the ovarian cyst forum that should answer more of your questions.
I don't have any experience with dermoid cysts, but we have a cyst forum. I know for a fact that a couple of members of that forum have had them and will have plenty of info for you. To get to that forum scroll down a little and you will see a link to click on on the right of the screen. I hope all goes well for you and you are feeling fine soon. Marie
