Finally some "answers" (from dr.)

I took my 16 yr. old daughter back to gyn today. She has had CT scans and ultrasounds done. She has an 8cm cyst on her right ovary. She has been in pain for the last 2 months. They just kind-of kept putting it off and wanting to "wait and see" of course with more tests. Well the cyst never got any smaller. Her gyn reccomended surgery today, but they can't do the surgery until the 23rd. The gyn told us today also that her really bad pain could be due to the cyst "twisting". Does anyone know exactly what that means? I'm thinking the cyst twists around the ovary.

I also have another question that has nothing to do with "medical" but has anyone ever had to deal with a child being on homebound? I am really having problems getting our district to approve her homebound even though the doctor has written her out. I'm trying to get an appointment with the superintendent but he's out of the office this week. If anyone can reccomend any avenues I may take I would really appreciate it.

I'm so sorry she is having to go through this at her age.  First off, many doctors refuse to believe that cysts can cause pain on their own.  An 8 cm cyst is displacing other organs and that pressure does cause pain.  I had a 16 cm cluster of cysts and needed percocet to manage the pain.  Twisting (or torsion) happens when a cyst that has a stem twists on that stem.  The pain increases dramatically and may be accompanied by vomiting and rapid heartbeat - this is an emergency situation.  I do hope the doctor is giving her something to help with the pain until her surgery.

Sorry, can't help on the homebound issue.  Please let us know how she does with surgery.

I posted a few minutes ago and I don't know what happened.. In any event, it's my understanding that the cyst will twist on itself or even the ovary if it is large. This is called a torsion.  This can be very very painful . I'm sorry that it will take until the 23rd. If your daughter is in a lot of pain or runs a fever, she should probably go to the ER.You may want to google Ovarian cyst torsion.. you will probably get a lot of information there.

I'm sorry she's having to go through this at such a young age, but I'm sure everything will work itself out.
Please let us know..
